Description
A blend of Tisbe biminiensis and Apocyclops panamensis copepods, aquacultured in-house at Reef Genetics and harvested weekly for maximum viability. Tisbe are benthic crawlers that colonize substrate and rockwork, while Apocyclops are midwater swimmers with rapid reproduction rates—together they provide broad ecological coverage across the water column. Each 8 oz bottle contains 100+ live adults and nauplii, sufficient for feeding or seeding tanks up to 40 gallons. Gut-loaded with lipid-rich phytoplankton prior to packaging, delivering essential fatty acids, protein, and enzymes to target animals. Well-suited for dragonets, anthias, wrasses, coral feeding, fry rearing, and long-term refugium seeding programs.

This blended copepod culture from Reef Genetics pairs two functionally distinct species—Tisbe biminiensis and Apocyclops panamensis—to address different ecological niches within the same system. Tisbe are benthic copepods that colonize substrate, live rock, and macroalgae beds, reproducing steadily and maintaining a crawling population accessible to bottom-oriented and nocturnal feeders. Apocyclops are midwater swimmers with a faster reproductive cycle and visible feeding behavior, making them effective for targeting corals, fry, and water-column feeders like dragonets and anthias. Running both species simultaneously creates a more resilient and biodiverse microfauna population than a monoculture approach.

The copepods are gut-loaded with phytoplankton prior to harvest, so animals receiving them benefit from a full nutritional profile including essential fatty acids, protein, probiotics, and enzymes. Harvesting is done weekly at Reef Genetics' in-house aquaculture facility, keeping travel time short and live counts high. Each 8 oz bottle delivers 100+ live adults and nauplii across both species.

This blend works for active feeding as well as long-term seeding. For seeding, the Tisbe population will establish in rockwork, refugiums, and macroalgae zones and reproduce continuously when supported with regular phytoplankton dosing and a stable macroalgae bed. Apocyclops contribute to the visible, free-swimming population that fish and corals will encounter during the day. The combination makes this product useful whether you are stocking a new tank, supplementing an existing pod population, or running a dedicated pod culturing system.

To dose, shut off pumps, UV sterilizers, and skimmers 10–20 minutes before adding the copepods. Dose at night or with lights off near live rock, refugium intake, or macroalgae. Feed phytoplankton one to three times per week to sustain reproduction. Maintaining macroalgae—chaeto or similar—is the single most effective step for building a self-sustaining population over time.
