Goes well with:
Dragon’s Breath (Halymenia sp.) is a stunning red macroalgae prized for both its vibrant appearance and its ability to naturally reduce excess nutrients in marine aquariums. As it grows, it absorbs nitrate and phosphate from the water, making it an excellent choice for nutrient export while adding brilliant red and orange coloration to refugiums, macroalgae displays, and reef aquariums.
Dragon’s Breath grows best under moderate to strong lighting with moderate to high water flow. While it can be anchored in place, it also does very well when gently tumbled in a refugium, allowing all surfaces to receive adequate light and preventing detritus from collecting within the algae. Consistent lighting and good water movement will encourage healthy growth and maintain its vibrant coloration.
As the macroalgae grows, periodic harvesting is recommended to maximize nutrient export and prevent overcrowding. Dragon’s Breath is generally considered a hardy macroalgae, making it a great option for hobbyists looking to naturally manage nutrients while enhancing the visual appeal of their aquarium.
Please note that tangs, rabbitfish, and many other herbivorous and omnivorous fish readily graze on Dragon’s Breath. While this makes it an excellent natural food source, it may not persist long in aquariums with heavy herbivore populations.
Our Dragon’s Breath is carefully selected and shipped fresh to ensure you receive a healthy, vibrant culture ready to thrive in your aquarium.
Size Guide:
- Golf Ball: Approximately a 3-inch portion (see second image for an example).
