WYSIWYG - Approx. Size: 3.75-4.25 Inches
Tilefish are striking, burrow-dwelling reef fish known for their elongated bodies, vibrant coloration, and unique behavior. Native to tropical and subtropical reefs, tilefish are excellent diggers, often constructing sandy burrows that provide shelter for themselves and other small fish. Their active, inquisitive nature and bright colors make them fascinating additions to large marine aquariums.
Tank Requirements
-
Minimum Tank Size: 100+ gallons
-
Environment: Open sandy substrate with rockwork for burrowing and shelter
-
Flow: Moderate
-
Lid: Recommended — some species may jump when startled
Tilefish thrive in well-established tanks with ample sand for digging and stable water quality.
Natural Behavior
Tilefish are diurnal, spending much of their time near the substrate. They are active diggers and may rearrange sand and rubble while constructing burrows. They are generally peaceful but may defend their burrows from similarly sized or shaped fish. Tilefish are curious and interactive, often exploring their surroundings with an alert, upright posture.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous, requiring a meaty diet:
-
Frozen mysis shrimp, krill, chopped clam, and seafood
-
High-quality marine carnivore pellets
-
Occasional live foods for enrichment
Feed 1–2 times daily, preferably near the substrate to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tankmates & Compatibility
-
Temperament: Peaceful — territorial mainly around their burrow
-
Reef Safe: Yes — generally safe with corals and invertebrates, but may disturb sand-dwelling inverts
-
Best With: Tangs, wrasses, angels, anthias, and other peaceful community fish
-
Avoid: Aggressive tankmates that may harass them, or very small fish that may be outcompeted for food
Saltwater Tilefish are captivating, active, and relatively peaceful fish that bring both personality and color to marine aquariums. Their burrowing behavior and striking appearance make them a rewarding species for hobbyists with large, well-maintained tanks.
