WYSIWYG - Approx. Size: 3.00-3.25 Inches

Wrasses are vibrant, active, and hardy reef fish known for their dazzling colors, dynamic personalities, and constant motion. Found throughout tropical and subtropical reefs worldwide, wrasses range from small, reef-safe species like Fairy Wrasses to larger, semi-aggressive types like Hogfish. Their striking patterns, playful behavior, and utility as pest controllers make them popular among both beginner and advanced marine aquarists.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30+ gallons for small species; 100+ gallons for larger species or active jumpers

  • Environment: Open swimming areas with rockwork, caves, and sand for burrowing species

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Lid: Required — wrasses are excellent jumpers

Wrasses thrive in well-established aquariums with stable water parameters, plenty of live rock for hiding, and soft sand beds for burrowing species.

Natural Behavior

Wrasses are active swimmers, often exploring every corner of the tank. Many species bury themselves in sand at night for protection. Wrasses display complex social interactions and hierarchies, and some species work as cleaner fish, removing parasites from other fish. Their constant motion and curiosity make them highly engaging to watch.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous to omnivorous depending on species:

  • Frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and chopped seafood

  • High-quality marine pellets and flakes

  • Some species may consume small invertebrates or pest anemones

Feed 1–3 times daily depending on size and activity level. A varied diet supports vibrant coloration and overall health.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive — small wrasses are generally reef-safe, larger wrasses may prey on invertebrates

  • Reef Safe: Yes — most small wrasses are reef safe, but caution with shrimp, crabs, or delicate invertebrates

  • Best With: Tangs, anthias, gobies, clownfish, angels, and other peaceful community fish

  • Avoid: Very small or extremely passive species that may be outcompeted for food

Saltwater Wrasses are colorful, active, and endlessly entertaining reef inhabitants. Their constant motion, playful behavior, and dazzling patterns make them one of the most engaging and rewarding families for marine aquarists.
