AWYSIWYG – Approx. Size: 1–3.5 Inches (Juvenile)
Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum)
The Clown Triggerfish is one of the most boldly patterned and visually arresting reef fish in the ocean. With its jet-black body covered in large white spots, vivid yellow mouth, and bright geometric accents near the tail and dorsal area, it truly lives up to its name. Native to tropical reefs of the Indo-Pacific, this powerful predator is as captivating in behavior as it is in appearance.
Tank Requirements
A minimum of 180 gallons is strongly recommended, as the Clown Triggerfish can grow up to 20 inches and is known for its active swimming and territorial nature. Provide substantial rockwork for shelter and hiding, as well as open water for free movement. A tight-fitting lid is crucial, as triggers are notorious for jumping and have powerful jaws that can move unsecured covers. This species thrives in stable, mature systems with consistent water quality.
Color, Personality, and Hardiness
Juveniles showcase bright yellow lips and a high-contrast pattern of white spots against a black body, which becomes more intricate and vivid with age. The dorsal side often develops yellow and black maze-like markings in adults. Clown Triggers are highly intelligent and bold, often becoming the centerpiece of any tank. They’re hardy and adaptable, though best suited for experienced aquarists due to their potential aggression and size.
Diet and Feeding
As a strong-jawed carnivore, the Clown Trigger demands a protein-rich diet. Offer a variety of frozen seafoods such as shrimp, squid, clam, krill, and silversides, supplemented with high-quality marine pellets. Feed at least twice daily. It's important to provide shelled items (e.g., whole clams or shelled shrimp) to prevent overgrowth of their teeth, which continuously grow throughout their life.
Tankmates and Behavior
The Clown Triggerfish is aggressive and highly territorial, especially as it matures. It is best housed with other large, assertive fish in a fish-only or FOWLR (Fish-Only-With-Live-Rock) setup. Avoid small or passive species, as well as invertebrates like shrimp, crabs, and snails—they will almost certainly be eaten. This species is not reef-safe. Best kept singly unless in massive systems with carefully chosen tankmates.
