Zebra Moray Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra)

The Zebra Moray Eel is a striking and hardy addition to large marine aquariums, instantly recognizable by its bold black-and-white banding and robust, muscular body. Unlike many other morays, this species is known for its calm demeanor and relatively reclusive nature, making it one of the more peaceful and manageable eels in the hobby. With proper care, it can grow to an impressive adult size of 3–5 feet and live for decades.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons or more

  • Environment: Rock-heavy aquascape with caves and overhangs for hiding

  • Flow: Low to moderate

  • Lid: Absolutely required — Zebra Morays are powerful escape artists

This species thrives in stable, mature systems with plenty of secure rockwork to retreat into. They are primarily nocturnal but may become more active during the day once acclimated.

Natural Behavior

Zebra Moray Eels are solitary and tend to be shy, spending most of their time coiled inside rock crevices. They are slow swimmers but strong, with powerful jaws specialized for crushing hard-shelled prey like crabs, snails, and shrimp. Unlike many morays, they are less likely to show aggression toward tankmates that don’t resemble food.

Diet & Feeding

Zebra Morays are carnivores with a diet focused on crustaceans and mollusks:

  • Chunks of shrimp, clam, squid, and crab

  • Frozen silversides or fish (occasionally)

  • Feed using tongs or feeding sticks to avoid accidental bites

Feed 2–3 times per week. Juveniles may eat more frequently, while adults thrive with larger, spaced-out meals.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and slow-moving

  • Reef Safe: With caution — safe with corals, but may eat ornamental crustaceans

  • Best With: Larger, non-aggressive fish such as tangs, angelfish, or puffers

Avoid housing with small fish, shrimp, or crabs, which may be viewed as prey. Zebra Morays are not aggressive toward most fish but will opportunistically eat anything they can catch and swallow.
