Johnson’s Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus johnsoni)

The Johnson’s Fairy Wrasse is a rare and dazzling reef fish, prized for its bold coloration and active swimming behavior. Native to deeper reef zones of the Marshall Islands, males display vivid red and electric yellow-orange hues with striking blue accents along the fins and body. Hardy, peaceful, and reef-safe, this wrasse makes a vibrant and energetic addition to peaceful community reef tanks.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 40 gallons (larger for groups or males)

  • Environment: Open swimming space with plenty of live rock for retreat and rest

  • Flow: Moderate to strong

  • Lid: Required — like most wrasses, they are known jumpers

These wrasses appreciate secure hiding spots and stable water conditions. A dimmer acclimation period may help them settle more quickly.

Natural Behavior

Johnson’s Fairy Wrasses are diurnal swimmers, active during the day and resting in crevices or sand beds at night. Males display more intense coloration—especially when displaying or courting—and may perform brief flaring shows to assert dominance or attract females. In groups, they establish a social hierarchy, with one dominant male and multiple females or juveniles.

Diet & Feeding

This species thrives on a varied, protein-rich diet:

  • Frozen mysis and brine shrimp

  • Finely chopped marine meats

  • High-quality flake and pellet foods formulated for carnivores

Feed 2–3 times daily to support energy levels and coloration.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful, active, and social

  • Reef Safe: Yes — no threat to corals or invertebrates

  • Best With: Other peaceful wrasses, gobies, anthias, tangs, and smaller reef fish

Avoid aggressive species or overly dominant wrasses. Multiple fairy wrasses can coexist in larger systems if introduced carefully, ideally one male per group to minimize conflict.
