Yellow Coris Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus)

The Yellow Coris Wrasse is a bright, energetic reef fish that adds a burst of sunshine to any saltwater aquarium. With its vivid yellow coloration, slender body, and constantly active nature, this wrasse is both eye-catching and functional. Known for its pest control capabilities and peaceful behavior, it’s a popular choice for reef keepers of all experience levels.

Tank Requirements

Yellow Coris Wrasses thrive in aquariums of 55 gallons or more, with plenty of open swimming space and sandy substrate. A soft sand bed is essential, as they bury themselves at night or when startled. Rockwork and caves offer added security and places to explore during the day.

Active and Functional

Always on the move, these wrasses spend their day patrolling the tank for pests like flatworms and small parasitic invertebrates. Their constant activity adds life and movement to reef tanks, and they’re often seen darting in and out of rockwork.

Diet and Feeding

Yellow Coris Wrasses are carnivorous and enjoy a diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen blends. They may also consume nuisance pests and small critters in the tank. Feed them 1–2 times daily to maintain their energy and coloration.

Tankmates and Behavior

These wrasses are generally peaceful and reef-safe, though they may eat very small ornamental shrimp or worms. They coexist well with most community fish and are rarely aggressive. Be sure to keep the aquarium securely covered, as they are known to jump, especially when first introduced.
