Shop aquacultured Cyphastrea corals for sale, from the classic Meteor Shower to branching, grafted, and 24k gold morphs. Cyphastrea is a small polyp stony coral that encrusts across rock in a thin, durable sheet studded with contrasting polyps, and it tolerates a far wider range of light and flow than most SPS corals. That forgiveness makes it one of the best first SPS for a reefer stepping up from LPS. Every Cyphastrea frag here is grown in our own systems and ships with a live arrival guarantee.

Cyphastrea Care FAQ

Is Cyphastrea hard to keep?

Cyphastrea is one of the most forgiving small polyp stony corals and a standard recommendation for a first SPS. It tolerates a wide range of light and flow, shrugs off nutrient levels that would stress acropora, and encrusts steadily rather than demanding perfect stability. It still wants consistent alkalinity, since it is laying down skeleton continuously, but it is far less likely to punish a small mistake than most SPS.

Is Cyphastrea an LPS or SPS coral?

Cyphastrea is classified as a small polyp stony coral, so it sits in the SPS group, though it does not look like the branching acropora and montipora most people picture. It encrusts as a thin sheet with small, widely spaced polyps rather than growing tall branches or plates. Its care sits between the two categories in practice: SPS-style attention to alkalinity, but LPS-style tolerance of moderate light and nutrients.

Where should I place Cyphastrea coral?

Middle rockwork with moderate to moderately high light and moderate flow is the standard placement, though Cyphastrea adapts across a wider range than most SPS. It encrusts across whatever it is attached to, so mount it where a spreading sheet works visually rather than somewhere it will quickly run into a neighbor. Strong, turbulent flow helps keep the thin tissue free of detritus and algae.

Is Cyphastrea a fast growing coral?

Yes, by SPS standards it encrusts quickly. A frag typically covers its plug within a couple of months and then spreads outward across the rock in a widening sheet. Branching Cyphastrea adds height more slowly than it adds footprint. Growth is driven mainly by stable alkalinity and calcium, so a consistent dosing or water change routine matters more than pushing light intensity higher.

Is Cyphastrea coral aggressive?

Mildly. Cyphastrea does not deploy the long sweeper tentacles that chalices and Euphyllia use, but as an encrusting coral it competes by growing over whatever is in its path, and it will encrust onto and smother a slower neighbor. Give it two to three inches of clearance and check the advancing margin every few months, trimming it back with a chisel or bone cutters if it starts approaching a coral you want to keep.

What are Cyphastrea corals?

Cyphastrea is a genus of small polyp stony corals that grow as thin encrusting sheets across rock, with small, widely spaced corallites raised slightly above a contrasting base. Some species also form short branches. The look is distinctive: a flat field of colored dots against a differently colored background, which is where names like Meteor Shower come from. Cyphastrea is by some margin the most forgiving of the common SPS corals.

Cyphastrea morphs worth knowing

Cyphastrea are traded on the contrast between polyp and base color:

  • Meteor Shower — the benchmark morph, with bright orange or yellow polyps scattered across a dark green base. Fast, hardy, and the usual starting point.
  • Branching Cyphastrea — forms that grow short thick branches as well as encrusting, adding vertical structure that the flat morphs cannot.
  • Grafted morphs — colonies carrying two distinct color zones fused together, producing a sharp boundary across a single sheet.
  • 24k gold, Spearmint, and single-tone morphs — saturated uniform colors that read strongly under blue-heavy lighting and offer good value.

Cyphastrea care: light, flow, and alkalinity

Moderate to moderately high light and moderate, turbulent flow suit Cyphastrea best, though it adapts far beyond that range. Because it is an SPS building skeleton continuously, alkalinity stability is the parameter that matters most: swings show up as tissue recession at the growing margin. Track it with dependable water testing equipment and compare your reef lighting coverage if colors look washed out. No feeding is required, though Cyphastrea will take fine particulate foods.

A good first SPS coral

Most reefers who lose their first acropora would have had a better experience starting with Cyphastrea. It gives the same encrusting SPS growth pattern and the same visual reward for stable alkalinity, but it tolerates the nutrient swings and imperfect flow that a newer tank inevitably has. Use it to learn what stable alkalinity actually looks like on your system, and treat a healthy, spreading Cyphastrea sheet as the signal that the tank is ready for more demanding SPS.

Where Cyphastrea fits in a reef

Cyphastrea works best on a mid-level rock face where the encrusting sheet can spread and be seen straight on. Compare other approachable encrusting and branching SPS in montipora corals and birdsnest corals, see the whole group in SPS corals, or browse the full range of live corals for sale.
