Velvet Sea Slug (Chelidonura varians)
The Velvet Sea Slug (Chelidonura varians) is a stunning and fascinating species known for its deep black body accented by vibrant electric blue or turquoise lines. Its smooth, velvety appearance and graceful movements make it a captivating addition to reef aquariums. Unlike many nudibranchs, this sea slug belongs to the Aglajidae family and is relatively more resilient—though still best suited for experienced aquarists.
Behavior and Role in the Aquarium
Chelidonura varians is an active sand-bed dweller that spends much of its time gliding over substrate and rock surfaces in search of food. It is especially valued for its ability to control populations of flatworms, making it a natural and efficient biological control option for reef tanks facing flatworm outbreaks. However, once its food source is depleted, it may need to be relocated to another tank with an active flatworm population.
Feeding
This species feeds primarily on small flatworms and other tiny benthic invertebrates. Because it relies on live prey, it’s best introduced into systems where flatworms are present. Supplemental feeding is rarely possible, so ensuring an available natural food source is key to keeping it healthy and active.
