Shop aquacultured Montipora corals for sale, covering plating caps, branching digitata, encrusting setosa, and grafted morphs. Montipora is the most versatile small polyp stony genus in the hobby, growing in four distinct forms and tolerating a much wider range of conditions than acropora. That combination of fast growth and forgiveness makes it the standard recommendation for a first SPS coral. Every Montipora frag here is grown in our own systems and ships with a live arrival guarantee.

Montipora Care FAQ

Are Montipora corals hard to keep?

Montipora is among the easiest small polyp stony corals and a standard first SPS. It adapts to a wider range of light and flow than acropora, tolerates higher nutrients, and grows fast enough that you learn quickly whether conditions suit it. It does need a matured tank and stable alkalinity, since it is building skeleton continuously, but it is far more forgiving of a small mistake than the acros most people try next.

Where should I place Montipora coral?

Placement depends on the growth form. Plating caps want an open, unobstructed spot on the mid to upper rockwork where the plate can spread horizontally without shading or being shaded. Branching digitata suits the mid to upper rock with good flow around the branches. Encrusting forms like setosa work on a flat rock face anywhere in the middle of the tank. All of them prefer moderate to high light and moderate, turbulent flow.

How fast does Montipora coral grow?

Fast, particularly the plating and encrusting forms. A Montipora cap frag can expand into a plate several inches across within a year, and encrusting setosa covers rock steadily in every direction. Digitata branches upward more slowly but still outpaces most LPS. Growth is driven mainly by stable alkalinity and adequate light, so a consistent dosing or water change routine matters more than chasing peak parameter numbers.

What is the difference between Montipora cap, digitata, and setosa?

They are different growth forms within the same genus. Montipora capricornis, the cap, grows thin whorled plates that spiral outward like a vase or a stack of leaves. Montipora digitata grows upright finger-like branches. Setosa encrusts flat across rock with raised polyps giving a textured surface. A fourth form, plain encrusting Montipora, simply coats whatever it grows on. Care is broadly the same across all four, so the choice is about the shape you want in the aquascape.

What is Montipora eating nudibranch?

Montipora eating nudibranchs are small white sea slugs that feed exclusively on Montipora tissue, leaving bare white skeleton behind as they work across a colony. They are the single most common reason a healthy Montipora suddenly declines. Because they are well camouflaged and lay eggs on the coral, prevention matters: dip every new frag before it enters the display, inspect the underside of plates regularly, and quarantine new arrivals if you can.

What are Montipora corals?

Montipora is a genus of small polyp stony corals with tiny polyps set into a finely textured skeleton, and it is unusual in the range of shapes it takes. The same genus produces thin spiralling plates, upright branching fingers, and flat encrusting sheets, so a reef stocked entirely with Montipora can still have varied structure. It is generally considered the most forgiving of the fast-growing SPS corals and the usual first step beyond LPS.

Montipora growth forms

Four forms cover almost everything sold in the hobby:

  • Plating caps (Montipora capricornis) — thin whorled plates that spiral outward into vase and shelf shapes. The most visually dramatic form and a fast grower given open space.
  • Branching digitata (Montipora digitata) — upright finger-like branches, extremely hardy and the easiest form to frag. Forest Fire and German Blue are long-established lines.
  • Setosa and encrusting forms — flat sheets with raised, textured polyps that spread across rock. Excellent for covering bare rock with color.
  • Grafted morphs — colonies fusing two color strains into one colony, producing sharp boundaries across a single plate or sheet.

Montipora care: light, flow, and alkalinity

Moderate to high light and moderate, turbulent flow suit Montipora across all its forms. As an SPS building skeleton continuously, alkalinity stability is the parameter that matters most, and swings show up as tissue recession or a sudden loss of color. Track it with dependable water testing equipment and compare your reef lighting coverage if a plate pales or browns. Plating caps in particular need light reaching the whole plate, so avoid placing them where a rock or another coral will shade half the colony.

Watching for Montipora eating nudibranchs

The main threat to a Montipora collection is not water chemistry but a pest. Montipora eating nudibranchs are small white slugs a few millimetres long that consume only Montipora tissue, advancing across a colony and leaving bare skeleton behind. They hide under plates and in crevices and lay eggs directly on the coral, so a single untreated frag can seed an entire tank. Dip every new Montipora before it goes into the display, check the undersides of plates when you notice tissue loss, and treat the whole collection rather than one colony if you find them.

Montipora as a first SPS

Montipora and birdsnest are the two SPS most worth trying before acropora, since both tolerate the conditions a real mixed reef runs at rather than the conditions an SPS-only system is tuned to. Compare birdsnest corals and cyphastrea corals as companions, step up to acropora corals when alkalinity has been stable for a few months, or browse the full range of live corals for sale.
