Diamond Goby (Valenciennea puellaris)
Diamond Gobies are peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish prized for their utility and unique appearance. They have elongated bodies with a shimmering white to pale tan coloration, adorned with orange spots and dashes along their head and flanks. Their constant sifting of sand through their gills not only makes them fascinating to watch, but also serves a practical purpose in keeping the substrate clean.
Tank Requirements
Diamond Gobies do best in aquariums of 30 gallons or more, with a deep sand bed that allows them to perform their natural sifting behavior. Live rock structures with ample caves and hiding spots help them feel secure and establish territories. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are known jumpers.
Functional Cleaners
These gobies are exceptional sand sifters. As they forage, they consume small organisms and debris in the sand while oxygenating the substrate and reducing detritus buildup. This behavior helps improve overall tank cleanliness and water clarity.
Diet and Feeding
Although they naturally feed on microorganisms in the sand, Diamond Gobies should be supplemented with a varied carnivorous diet. Offer finely chopped meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality frozen blends. Over time, many adapt well to prepared sinking pellets or wafers.
Tankmates and Behavior
Peaceful and non-aggressive, Diamond Gobies make excellent additions to community reef tanks. They may form bonded pairs if introduced together and will often share a burrow. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive bottom dwellers or fish that may outcompete them for food.
