Skunk Tilefish (Hoplolatilus marcosi)
The Skunk Tilefish is a graceful and colorful reef dweller known for its peaceful temperament and striking coloration. Displaying a pearly body with a vivid pink dorsal stripe, this species adds a flash of elegance and movement to the mid and upper levels of the aquarium. Native to the Indo-Pacific, Skunk Tilefish often hover above burrows in sandy areas, retreating quickly when startled.
Tank Requirements
A minimum of 50 gallons is recommended, with a deep sand bed or rubble area for burrow construction. Provide ample open swimming space and secure rockwork, as tilefish are strong jumpers and require a tightly fitting lid. Moderate flow, pristine water quality, and subdued lighting conditions will help reduce stress and promote natural behavior.
Color, Personality, and Hardiness
Skunk Tilefish are shy but captivating, often forming pairs or small groups in the wild. Once acclimated, they display calm, steady swimming patterns and become more visible throughout the day. They are moderately hardy but sensitive to sudden movements and poor water conditions, so stability is key to long-term success.
Diet and Feeding
Feed a varied diet of finely chopped meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings daily encourage consistent activity and health. Over time, they may learn to accept prepared frozen blends.
Tankmates and Behavior
Peaceful and reef-safe, Skunk Tilefish coexist well with non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with large or boisterous species that may outcompete them for food. Once comfortable, they make excellent community reef residents and exhibit fascinating natural burrow-digging behavior.
