Red Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica)

The Red Firefish is a graceful and vibrant reef fish, prized for its striking coloration and peaceful demeanor. With a slender, elongated body, it fades from white at the head to a brilliant orange-red at the tail, accented by a dramatic, sail-like dorsal fin and a curious, hovering swimming style. Its calm temperament and eye-catching look make it a favorite for nano and reef aquariums alike.

Tank Requirements

Red Firefish thrive in tanks of 20 gallons or more, making them an ideal choice for small to medium-sized reef setups. They prefer a peaceful environment with plenty of rockwork and caves for hiding, especially during acclimation and when startled. A secure lid is essential, as firefish are known jumpers, especially when spooked.

Shy but Hardy

Though initially shy, Red Firefish are surprisingly hardy and adapt well to captivity once established. They often hover in the water column near a favorite rock crevice, darting in for cover when alarmed. Over time, they become more confident and will remain out in the open, especially if housed in a calm tank with non-aggressive tankmates.

Diet and Feeding

Red Firefish are carnivorous and easy to feed in captivity. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped meaty foods, along with high-quality micro pellets or flakes. Feeding them small amounts 1–2 times daily helps maintain vibrant coloration and overall health.

Tankmates and Behavior

These fish are peaceful and reef-safe, making them excellent additions to community reef tanks. They do best either singly or as a mated pair, as multiple individuals may fight unless bonded. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fast-swimming species that may outcompete them or cause stress. Firefish are generally compatible with gobies, clownfish, dartfish, and small wrasses.
