Oreni Tilefish
(Hoplolatilus oreni)
WYSIWYG – Approx. Size: 5.50-6.00 Inches
The Oreni Tilefish is a slender, elegant marine species known for its vivid pastel coloration and dynamic swimming behavior. Featuring a shimmering blend of lavender, yellow, and blue tones, this fish brings graceful motion and vibrant color to the midwater column of reef or FOWLR aquariums. Native to deeper reef slopes, the Oreni Tilefish prefers a peaceful, well-oxygenated environment with plenty of vertical swimming space and secure hiding areas. It’s a rewarding and active addition to intermediate or advanced hobbyist systems.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons (larger for multiples or community systems)
Environment: Deep sand bed, overhangs, rockwork, and open swimming areas
Flow: Moderate
Lid: Required — tilefish are notorious jumpers, especially when acclimating
This species thrives in calm, stable tanks with a secure aquascape and subdued lighting. Tilefish are prone to stress if startled and need plenty of cover and quiet surroundings.
Natural Behavior
Oreni Tilefish are peaceful, open-water swimmers that hover mid-level in the tank, often retreating quickly to a cave or tunnel when startled. They may form monogamous pairs or live singly. Over time, they can become quite bold and interactive, especially when housed in a stable, low-stress environment.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous and highly active feeders:
-
Frozen mysis and enriched brine shrimp
-
Finely chopped shrimp, clam, and squid
-
High-quality micro-pellets and soft granules
Feed 1–2 times daily. Frequent, small feedings help maintain energy levels and reduce stress.
Tankmates & Compatibility
Temperament: Peaceful and shy; best with non-aggressive species
Reef Safe: Yes — does not bother corals or inverts
Best With: Gobies, fairy wrasses, flasher wrasses, anthias, chromis
Avoid housing with aggressive fish such as dottybacks, triggers, or large hawkfish. Ideal in quiet community reefs where it won’t be outcompeted for food or territory.
