Tank Requirements

Butterflyfish thrive in mature aquariums with pristine water quality and abundant grazing surfaces. Some species adapt well to captivity, while others are best kept by experienced aquarists due to specialized diets.

Natural Behavior

Butterflyfish are active, diurnal swimmers that graze constantly on coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates in the wild. Many form pairs or small groups, while some are best kept singly in aquariums. They are peaceful but may be territorial toward conspecifics or similar-looking species.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous, though diets vary by species:

• Prepared frozen foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood)

• High-quality marine pellets and flakes

• Sponge- and algae-based frozen diets for species with specialized needs

• Some species require live foods or coral polyps and may be challenging to sustain in captivity

Feed 2–3 times daily; frequent, varied feedings are key to long-term success.
