Desjardini Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii)

The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is a majestic and highly recognizable species known for its large, disk-shaped body and dramatic, sail-like dorsal and anal fins. Its coloration features a mix of earthy browns and grays overlaid with bold vertical stripes and intricate spots, especially prominent on the fins and face. This tang is both beautiful and functional, making it a centerpiece fish in large reef and marine aquariums.

Tank Requirements

Due to its adult size and active nature, the Desjardini Sailfin Tang requires a minimum tank size of 125 gallons, with ample swimming space and plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Strong water flow and high water quality are essential, as they are sensitive to poor conditions. Ensure your aquascape allows for both open areas and secure retreats.

Algae Grazers

Desjardini Tangs are excellent herbivores and play a valuable role in controlling nuisance algae. They constantly graze on surfaces throughout the tank, helping to manage hair algae, film algae, and other common growths. Their foraging behavior not only benefits tank cleanliness but also keeps them mentally and physically stimulated.

Diet and Feeding

Although they are primarily herbivorous, these tangs benefit from a varied diet. Offer dried seaweed (nori), spirulina-based flakes and pellets, and blanched greens like romaine or zucchini. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure a complete nutritional profile. Feed multiple times daily, especially in high-activity tanks.

Tankmates and Behavior

Generally peaceful with most tankmates, Desjardini Sailfins can become territorial toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish, especially in smaller tanks. They do best either singly or introduced alongside other tangs in very large systems (200+ gallons). Despite their size and presence, they are reef-safe, posing no threat to corals or invertebrates.

With proper space and care, Desjardini Tangs become bold, interactive, and long-lived members of a marine aquarium.
