WYSIWYG - Approx. Size: 3.00-3.25 Inches

Groupers are powerful, predatory reef fish known for their stocky bodies, large mouths, and bold personalities. Found throughout tropical and subtropical waters, groupers range in size from smaller aquarium species like the Miniatus Grouper to giants such as the Blue Line Grouper or Panther Grouper. They are highly adaptable, fast-growing, and commanding in presence, making them a favorite for large predator displays.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 180–300+ gallons depending on species (many grow very large)

  • Environment: Open swimming areas with caves, ledges, and rockwork for shelter

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Lid: Recommended — strong fish that may leap or dislodge tank covers when startled

Groupers require very large, stable systems with powerful filtration due to their heavy feeding and waste production.

Natural Behavior

Groupers are ambush predators that use stealth and sudden bursts of speed to capture prey. In aquariums, they quickly recognize their caretakers and may even beg for food. They are generally solitary and territorial, often claiming a section of rockwork or a cave as their own.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous and hearty eaters:

  • Fresh or frozen seafood such as shrimp, squid, clam, and fish fillets

  • Prepared meaty foods designed for large carnivores

  • Avoid feeding live feeder fish (can spread disease and cause aggression)

Feed 3–4 times per week. Overfeeding should be avoided, as groupers are prone to obesity in captivity.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Aggressive predator — will eat any fish or invertebrate that fits in its mouth

  • Reef Safe: No — unsafe with ornamental shrimp, crabs, or small reef fish

  • Best With: Other large, robust species such as triggers, puffers, large wrasses, eels, and tangs

  • Avoid: Small or delicate fish and invertebrates that may be seen as prey

Groupers are striking centerpiece fish for large predator aquariums. With their bold personalities, vibrant colors, and sheer presence, they are best suited for experienced aquarists with the space and resources to house them properly.
