Blue Face Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas – Blue Morph)

The Blue Face Scopas Tang is a stunning and rare color variant of the classic Scopas Tang, featuring an iridescent steel-blue face that gradually fades into rich browns or smoky golds along the body. This eye-catching morph brings a subtle elegance and individuality to any reef or FOWLR (fish-only with live rock) system. Like its standard counterpart, this tang is hardy, adaptable, and highly valued for its algae-grazing abilities.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 200 gallons or more

  • Environment: Live rock with open swimming space and grazing surfaces

  • Flow: Moderate to high

  • Lid: Recommended — while not notorious jumpers, tangs can dash if startled

This tang is active and requires room to swim as well as access to natural grazing surfaces throughout the day.

Natural Behavior

Blue Face Scopas Tangs are constant foragers, often seen grazing on film algae and diatoms throughout the rockwork. While juveniles tend to be more shy, adults grow bolder and may show mild territorial behavior toward other tangs, particularly those with similar body shapes. Their unique coloration makes them a standout among surgeonfish, especially under reef lighting.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily herbivorous, this tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and vegetable matter:

  • Dried seaweed (nori) offered on a clip daily

  • Spirulina flakes and pellets

  • Occasional mysis shrimp or other meaty supplements

  • Algae-based frozen blends

Feed 2–3 times daily to support energy levels, immune health, and color vibrancy.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive with other tangs; otherwise peaceful

  • Reef Safe: Yes — will not bother corals or invertebrates

  • Best With: Wrasses, angelfish, gobies, clowns, anthias, and other peaceful fish

Use caution when mixing with other Zebrasoma or similarly shaped tangs unless the tank is 125+ gallons with established territory and rockwork. Best kept singly in smaller systems.
