Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto)
The Royal Gramma is a reef-safe classic, cherished for its stunning coloration and calm demeanor. With a brilliant violet front half that fades into a rich golden-yellow tail, this small fish brings a bold splash of color to any saltwater aquarium. Native to Caribbean reef caves and crevices, Royal Grammas are ideal for both beginner and experienced hobbyists.
Tank Requirements
Royal Grammas do well in aquariums of 20 gallons or more, with plenty of rockwork and hiding spots. They prefer dimly lit caves and overhangs where they can retreat and feel secure. These hardy fish adapt well to a range of conditions, making them a great choice for smaller reef tanks.
Peaceful and Vibrant
Known for their peaceful, yet slightly territorial nature, Royal Grammas generally keep to themselves but will defend their chosen cave or nook. Their slow, hovering swim style and vibrant color make them a standout addition to any aquascape.
Diet and Feeding
Royal Grammas are carnivorous and should be offered a varied diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods. They are not picky eaters and usually take to prepared foods quickly.
Tankmates and Behavior
Royal Grammas are peaceful and reef-safe, making them excellent additions to community reef setups. They mix well with a wide range of tankmates, though they may become territorial toward similar-shaped fish or other basslets in smaller tanks. They leave corals and inverts completely untouched.
