The Dusky Margin Wrasse is a hardy and attractive reef wrasse found throughout the Indo-Pacific. This species features a slender, torpedo-shaped body with green to turquoise tones highlighted by darker scale margins, giving it a net-like appearance. Subtle orange and blue facial markings add extra detail, while males develop more intense coloration with maturity. Active, curious, and excellent for pest control, the Dusky Margin Wrasse is both beautiful and functional in a reef aquarium.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (larger preferred for adults)

  • Environment: Sandbed for burrowing and rockwork for foraging

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Lid: Required — wrasses are notorious jumpers

Dusky Margin Wrasses require a soft sand substrate to bury themselves at night or when frightened, and thrive in tanks with established rockwork that supports natural foraging behaviors.

Natural Behavior

This wrasse is active during the day, constantly searching the rockwork and substrate for food. They are peaceful toward most tankmates, though males may become more territorial with maturity. At night, or when threatened, they dive into the sand for safety.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous with a focus on small invertebrates:

  • Frozen mysis and brine shrimp

  • Finely chopped seafood (clam, squid, shrimp)

  • High-quality marine pellets and frozen blends

  • Will naturally hunt pests such as flatworms, pyramid snails, and small crustaceans

Feed 2–3 times daily to support their high activity level.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive — generally community-friendly

  • Reef Safe: With caution — safe with corals, but may consume small ornamental shrimp and crabs

  • Best With: Tangs, angels, anthias, other wrasses, and moderately sized community fish

  • Avoid: Very small ornamental shrimp or timid nano fish that may be harassed

The Dusky Margin Wrasse is both a striking swimmer and a useful utility fish, combining beauty, activity, and natural pest control in a reef setting.
