Dracula Goby (Stonogobiops dracula)

The Dracula Goby is a striking and peaceful nano reef fish, known for its vivid coloration and fascinating behavior. With a pale body marked by bold red-orange stripes and a distinct black patch on the dorsal fin, this goby adds a subtle elegance and unique personality to smaller marine aquariums. Its symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp makes it a favorite for aquarists looking to observe natural pair behavior in captivity.

Tank Requirements

Dracula Gobies thrive in tanks of 10 gallons or more, though larger volumes are ideal if paired with a pistol shrimp. They prefer sandy substrates and ample rockwork to form burrows and hide. As burrowers, they appreciate a stable, low-flow environment with a secure lid—these fish are known jumpers.

Symbiotic Burrowers

A standout feature of the Dracula Goby is its mutualistic relationship with pistol shrimp (often Alpheus randalli). The goby acts as a lookout while the shrimp maintains the burrow, creating a fascinating and naturalistic display in the home aquarium. While they can live without a shrimp partner, the pairing adds both biological interest and behavioral enrichment.

Diet and Feeding

Dracula Gobies are carnivores and benefit from a varied meaty diet. Offer a mix of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets designed for small carnivores. Feed 2–3 times per day, ensuring food reaches them at the substrate level.

Tankmates and Behavior

These gobies are peaceful and compatible with most reef-safe fish, invertebrates, and corals. Due to their shy nature, they do best with non-aggressive tankmates and should not be housed with overly boisterous species. In a reef tank, they pose no threat to corals or ornamental invertebrates, making them a fully reef-safe choice.
