The Captive-Bred Majestic Angel, also known as the Blue Girdled Angelfish, is one of the most elegant and recognizable large angels. Its body is deep blue adorned with vibrant yellow-orange bands, while the face is highlighted by a striking sapphire-blue mask. Unlike wild-collected specimens, captive-bred Majestic Angels adapt more easily to aquarium life, are hardier, and accept prepared foods more readily — making them an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a centerpiece angel with long-term success.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons (larger preferred for adults)

  • Environment: Large rockwork structures with caves and overhangs for shelter

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Lid: Recommended — large angels may jump when startled

Majestic Angels thrive in mature, well-established reef or fish-only aquariums with plenty of grazing surfaces and swimming space.

Natural Behavior

This species is bold yet generally less aggressive than some other large angels. They spend their time grazing on surfaces, exploring caves, and cruising open areas. Juveniles and adults have different coloration, but both are highly striking. Best kept singly to avoid aggression with other large angels, though they may coexist with other semi-aggressive fish in large aquariums.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous with a preference for sponge- and algae-based foods:

  • High-quality angelfish pellets and frozen preparations with sponge content

  • Spirulina and dried seaweed (nori)

  • Frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood

  • Occasional enriched frozen blends for color and immune health

Feed 2–3 times daily with a varied diet to support growth, health, and long-term coloration.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive — may be territorial, especially toward other large angels

  • Reef Safe: With caution — may nip at soft corals, LPS, and clam mantles

  • Best With: Tangs, wrasses, larger butterflyfish, triggers, and other bold but non-aggressive species

  • Avoid: Other Pomacanthus or Holacanthus angels unless in very large systems

With its regal colors, graceful movements, and hardiness when captive-bred, the Majestic Angel is a true centerpiece fish that elevates any large display aquarium.
