WYSIWYG – Approx. Size: 3.75-4.25 Inches

Rabbitfish, including the popular Foxface species, are hardy, algae-grazing reef fish prized for their vivid colors and unique personalities. Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, these fish display striking patterns ranging from bold yellow and black to mottled camouflage. Rabbitfish are peaceful, excellent algae controllers, and adaptable to a variety of aquarium settings. Their venomous dorsal spines make them both fascinating and functional additions to large marine tanks.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 100+ gallons

  • Environment: Spacious aquascape with live rock for grazing and open swimming areas

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Lid: Recommended — they may jump when startled

Rabbitfish thrive in mature aquariums with abundant natural algae. They are resilient and generally very hardy once established.

Natural Behavior

Rabbitfish are diurnal, actively grazing on algae during the day and retreating into rockwork to rest at night. While generally peaceful, they may show mild territoriality toward other Rabbitfish unless kept as a bonded pair. Their venomous dorsal spines are used defensively, so caution should be taken when handling or maintaining the aquarium.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily herbivorous but opportunistic omnivores:

  • Dried seaweed (nori) and marine algae sheets

  • Macroalgae (Gracilaria, Ulva, Caulerpa)

  • High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes

  • Occasional meaty foods like mysis or brine shrimp

Feed 2–3 times daily. A constant supply of algae or plant matter helps maintain health and coloration.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful and community-friendly

  • Reef Safe: Yes — excellent algae grazers and generally safe with corals

  • Best With: Tangs, wrasses, angels, anthias, clownfish, gobies, and most peaceful reef fish

  • Avoid: Other Rabbitfish (unless a bonded pair) and highly aggressive tankmates that may stress them

Rabbitfish & Foxface are hardy, attractive, and highly functional algae-eaters that make them ideal for reef aquariums. With their bold colors, peaceful nature, and utility in controlling nuisance algae, they are a favorite among both beginner and advanced marine aquarists.
