Three-Banded Butterflyfish (Chaetodon robustus)

The Three-Banded Butterflyfish is a striking reef dweller distinguished by its bold pattern of three vertical black bands contrasting against a bright yellow body. Native to the tropical reefs of the Eastern Atlantic, especially around the West African coast, this species adds vibrant color and dynamic movement to large, well-maintained aquariums. Its robust nature and relative hardiness make it a popular choice for experienced marine hobbyists.

Tank Requirements

A minimum of 125 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory for this active fish. The aquarium should include:

  • Plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter

  • Open swimming areas

  • Stable, mature reef or FOWLR setups

Water parameters should remain consistent, with excellent filtration to support the species’ moderate bio-load.

Color, Personality, and Hardiness

With a vivid yellow body accented by three distinctive black bands—one running through the eye, one mid-body, and one near the tail—the Three-Banded Butterflyfish is visually captivating. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial as adults, especially toward conspecifics or similar species.

This species is considered moderately hardy, suitable for aquarists with some marine experience. Early acclimation is crucial to reduce stress and encourage feeding.

Diet and Feeding

Three-Banded Butterflyfish are omnivores, feeding primarily on benthic invertebrates and algae in the wild. In captivity, their diet should include:

  • High-quality marine flakes and pellets

  • Frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis, and other meaty foods

  • Spirulina and algae-based supplements

Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain optimal health and coloration.

Tankmates and Behavior

Generally compatible with other peaceful fish, but avoid housing with highly aggressive or overly territorial species. Ideal tankmates include:

  • Tangs

  • Wrasses

  • Other peaceful butterflyfish species

  • Anthias

Avoid keeping multiple Three-Banded Butterflyfish in the same tank unless it is very large, as they can become territorial. This species is not reef-safe—they may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates.
