The Swallowtail Angelfish (Genicanthus melanospilos) is a graceful and peaceful species known for its slender body, elegant color pattern, and distinctive swallowtail-shaped yellow caudal fin. Males typically display striking vertical black stripes contrasted with a pale body, while females exhibit more subdued coloring. When kept as a bonded pair, these angelfish demonstrate fascinating social behaviors and add vibrant movement to large reef or FOWLR tanks.

Tank Requirements

Environment: Open swimming areas with rockwork and hiding spots

Natural Behavior

Swallowtail Angelfish are peaceful and social, often seen swimming mid-level in the aquarium. They form monogamous pairs, displaying coordinated swimming and cooperative territory defense. Compared to other angelfish, Genicanthus species are less aggressive and more reef-safe.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous with a preference for varied diets:

  • Marine algae and spirulina-based flakes or pellets

  • Frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood

  • High-quality prepared angelfish formulas

Feed 2–3 times daily. A varied diet supports vibrant colors and active behavior.
