SKU: w_fish082525.41

WYSIWYG – Approx. Size: 2.50-3.00 Inches

Butterflyfish are graceful, laterally compressed reef fish prized for their bold colors, elongated snouts, and iconic patterns. Found throughout tropical reefs worldwide, they range from striking yellow-and-black species to intricate lattice and masked varieties. Known for their constant movement and elegance, butterflyfish are active swimmers that bring sophistication and color to large aquariums.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons for smaller species, 150+ gallons for larger or delicate varieties

  • Environment: Large aquascapes with rockwork for grazing and open areas for swimming

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Lid: Strongly recommended — butterflyfish may jump when startled

Butterflyfish thrive in mature aquariums with pristine water quality and abundant grazing surfaces. Some species adapt well to captivity, while others are best kept by experienced aquarists due to specialized diets.

Natural Behavior

Butterflyfish are active, diurnal swimmers that graze constantly on coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates in the wild. Many form pairs or small groups, while some are best kept singly in aquariums. They are peaceful but may be territorial toward conspecifics or similar-looking species.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous, though diets vary by species:

  • Prepared frozen foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood)

  • High-quality marine pellets and flakes

  • Sponge- and algae-based frozen diets for species with specialized needs

  • Some species require live foods or coral polyps and may be challenging to sustain in captivity

Feed 2–3 times daily; frequent, varied feedings are key to long-term success.

Tankmates & Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful, though may quarrel with similar species

  • Reef Safe: With caution — many species nip at corals, clams, and some invertebrates

  • Best With: Tangs, wrasses, angels, anthias, and other peaceful to semi-aggressive community fish

  • Avoid: Very aggressive species or prized corals/clams in reef setups

Butterflyfish bring elegance, color, and constant activity to large aquariums, though some species require advanced care. With proper selection, they can be both hardy and rewarding centerpiece fish.
