The Diamond Goby (Valenciennea puellaris) is a hardy and beneficial saltwater fish known for its sand-sifting behavior and striking appearance. With its elongated body, shimmering silver-white coloration, and orange diamond-shaped markings, this goby adds both beauty and functionality to a marine aquarium.

Tank Requirements

Diamond Gobies require a tank of at least 30 gallons, though larger tanks with a deep sandy substrate are preferred to support their natural burrowing and sifting behaviors. They thrive in well-established aquariums with plenty of hiding spots, such as rock caves and ledges, to help them feel secure.

Sand-Sifting Behavior

One of the biggest benefits of keeping a Diamond Goby is its ability to aerate and clean the sand bed. It constantly sifts through the substrate in search of food, preventing detritus buildup and helping to maintain a healthy aquarium environment. A fine to medium-grade sand bed at least 2-3 inches deep is ideal.

Sensitive to Water Quality

While relatively hardy, Diamond Gobies still require stable water parameters to thrive. Regular water changes, proper filtration, and maintaining optimal salinity, pH, and oxygen levels are important to keep them healthy. Since they are known jumpers, a secure lid is highly recommended to prevent escape.

Diet and Feeding

Although they get some nutrition from sifting sand, Diamond Gobies require additional feedings of high-quality marine foods. A diet consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-protein pellets ensures they receive proper nutrition. They should be fed at least twice daily to maintain energy levels.
