The Gold-Ring Bristletooth Tang, Ctenochaetus truncatus, is an attractive and highly active surgeonfish distinguished by its bright eye ring, compact body, and finely patterned adult coloration. Juveniles can be vivid yellow, while mature fish transition to orange-brown or dark brown with numerous tiny blue to yellow spots across the body. The comparatively squared-off tail of adults is another characteristic feature of this distinctive bristletooth tang.

Native to the Indian Ocean, this species inhabits sheltered inner reef crests and slopes, often moving among large corals, rocky gutters, and other reef structure either alone or in small groups. Like other members of the genus Ctenochaetus, it is adapted to spend much of the day browsing reef surfaces for fine algae, detritus, and associated organic material.

Reaching approximately 6–7 inches in adult length, the Gold-Ring Bristletooth Tang offers the appeal and constant activity of a surgeonfish without attaining the massive dimensions of many larger tang species. Tank Requirements

The Gold-Ring Bristletooth Tang should be maintained in a mature marine aquarium with abundant established live rock and sufficient open swimming room. Rockwork should provide caves, overhangs, and sheltered areas while leaving clear pathways for continuous movement throughout the aquarium.

Established rock surfaces are particularly important because this species naturally spends much of the day brushing fine algae, detritus, and organic films from hard substrates. A newer or unusually sterile aquarium provides fewer opportunities for this natural feeding behavior.

Moderate to strong water movement, good oxygenation, and efficient filtration are recommended. Although relatively compact for a tang, it remains an active surgeonfish and benefits from a tank with generous horizontal swimming space.

A secure lid is advisable, particularly during initial acclimation when sudden movements or territorial disputes may cause the fish to dart toward the surface.

Diet and Feeding

The Gold-Ring Bristletooth Tang is primarily a grazer that consumes fine algae, detritus, and organic material associated with reef surfaces. Its specialized bristle-like teeth are designed for brushing food from rock rather than tearing away large pieces of macroalgae.

Offer marine algae sheets such as nori regularly, along with spirulina-based pellets, high-quality herbivore preparations, and frozen foods formulated for grazing marine fish. Foods containing natural marine algae are particularly useful for maintaining a varied diet.

Mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and quality frozen marine blends can be offered in moderation to provide additional protein and nutritional variety.

Several smaller feedings throughout the day are ideal when practical. Prepared foods should complement the fish's continual natural browsing on mature rockwork rather than completely replacing it.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Gold-Ring Bristletooth Tang is generally compatible with peaceful and semi-aggressive marine fish but can become territorial toward other surgeonfish. Aggression is most likely toward other Ctenochaetus species or tangs with similar body shapes and grazing habits.

Keeping a single bristletooth tang is generally the safest approach in moderately sized aquariums. Multiple tangs are more likely to coexist successfully in substantially larger systems with abundant swimming space, multiple feeding areas, and carefully planned introductions.

Suitable tankmates include clownfish, wrasses, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, anthias, and many other appropriately sized reef fish. Avoid overcrowding the aquarium or forcing several similarly shaped tangs to compete for limited grazing territory.

Reef Compatibility

The Gold-Ring Bristletooth Tang is considered reef safe and does not normally prey upon healthy corals, ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, or other commonly maintained reef invertebrates.

Its nearly continuous browsing of rock surfaces makes it particularly well suited to established reef aquariums. However, it should not be expected to consume every type of nuisance algae. Bristletooth tangs specialize in fine algal films, diatoms, detritus, and associated organic material rather than long or coarse algae.
