Water Chemistry for GSP
Green star polyps tolerate a wide range of water conditions and can handle slightly elevated nutrient levels, which is part of why they work well for beginners. Stable parameters still produce the steadiest growth and brightest color. Regular water changes also help prevent nuisance algae from settling on the mat.
Lighting Your Green Star Polyps
GSP grows under low to high light, but moderate lighting in the 50–150 PAR range is often ideal because it promotes steady growth without risking bleaching or algae overgrowth on the mat. Blue-spectrum lighting in particular brings out the vivid green coloration. We keep our colonies under EcoTech Marine Radions and T5 systems.
Water Flow
Moderate to strong flow keeps the mat free of detritus and algae and encourages full polyp extension. Choose a spot with steady, indirect flow that lets the polyps sway gently, and avoid direct, high-intensity currents that can cause them to retract or stay closed. What We Feed Our Green Star Polyps
GSP gets most of its energy from its symbiotic zooxanthellae and does not need frequent feeding, but occasional small-particle foods can boost growth and color. Recommended foods include:
- Phytoplankton: Tisochrysis, Rhodomonas, and Tetraselmis
- Coral foods: Reef Roids and Benepets Coral Food
Lightly dust the polyps using a pipette or turkey baster, and pause water flow for 10–15 minutes so the food stays suspended around the coral long enough to be absorbed.
