Doctorfish Tangs (Acanthurus chirurgus) can reach about 10–12 inches as adults, and they are powerful, fast swimmers. A single adult should be kept in a very large tank, realistically 180 gallons or more, with long open swimming space and heavy filtration. They do poorly in cramped systems, even if the tank is “technically” large enough in gallons.
Is a Doctorfish Tang reef-safe, and will it bother corals or invertebrates?
Generally, yes, it is considered reef-safe with corals and most invertebrates. The main reef issue is not coral predation but grazing behavior: if underfed, it may nip at film algae, turf algae, and occasionally pick at rocks or nuisance growths aggressively.
