FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

Why does my Blue Hippo Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus) keep getting ich or velvet even in a “clean” reef tank?

Blue Hippo Tangs are one of the most parasite-prone tangs in the hobby because they stress easily during capture, shipping, and acclimation, and that stress can trigger marine ich or velvet. Even when water quality looks perfect, this species often arrives with a compromised mucus coat and a suppressed immune system. The best prevention is quarantine before the fish ever enters the display, with close observation for at least 30 days and proactive treatment if needed. A healthy Blue Hippo Tang should be eating aggressively and swimming normally; if it starts flashing, breathing fast, or hiding, act quickly because velvet can move very fast on this species.

How big of a tank does a Blue Hippo Tang really need, since many stores sell juveniles?

Juvenile Blue Hippo Tangs are often sold very small, but they grow into active, open-water swimmers that need a much larger system than their juvenile size suggests. A long tank is far more important than a tall tank because they are constant cruisers. For long-term care, a minimum of 6 feet of swimming length is strongly preferred, with larger being better as the fish matures. In undersized tanks, they commonly become stressed, pace the glass, or develop head-and-lateral-line erosion from chronic confinement and poor environmental quality.

Why does my Blue Hippo Tang go from electric blue to a dark, almost gray color?

Blue Hippo Tangs can dramatically darken when stressed, sleeping, or feeling threatened. This color change is often a normal stress response, especially after lights out, during transport, or when a dominant tankmate is harassing them. If the darkening is paired with clamped fins, rapid breathing, or refusal to eat, it usually means the fish is not settled. A healthy specimen will usually return to its vivid blue with yellow tail and dark markings once it feels secure, is feeding consistently, and has enough swimming space and hiding spots.

What foods do Blue Hippo Tangs need to keep them healthy and prevent head and lateral line erosion?

Blue Hippo Tangs are primarily herbivores/omnivores that do best on frequent, varied feedings with a strong algae component. The core diet should include marine algae sheets, quality algae-based pellets, and frozen foods with greens mixed in. They also appreciate small amounts of meaty foods like mysis, but plant matter should remain the foundation. To help reduce the risk of head and lateral line erosion, keep the diet rich in vitamins and avoid relying on only one food type. Also, strong water quality, low stress, and stable minerals are just as important as diet for preventing HLLE in this species.

Can a Blue Hippo Tang live peacefully with other tangs, especially in a reef tank?

Blue Hippo Tangs can coexist with other tangs, but only when the tank is large enough and the introduction order is managed carefully. They are generally not the most aggressive tang, but they can become territorial if crowded or introduced into an established tang hierarchy. In smaller tanks, they may get bullied by more dominant species like Sohal, Powder Blue, or Achilles tangs. In a reef tank, they are usually safe with corals, but the key is giving them enough space, multiple feeding stations, and enough rockwork to break sight lines so they don’t feel trapped or forced into constant conflict.

The Captive-Bred Blue Hippo Tang, Paracanthurus hepatus, is one of the most recognizable saltwater fish, displaying an intense royal-blue body marked by a sweeping black palette-shaped pattern and a bright yellow caudal fin. Its bold coloration, active swimming behavior, and distinctive compressed body shape create an unmistakable presence in large reef aquariums and fish-only marine displays.

Captive-bred specimens are produced through marine aquaculture rather than collected directly from wild reefs. The species itself is native throughout the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa eastward into the central Pacific, where it inhabits clear, current-swept seaward reefs and frequently swims above coral-rich habitats. Although captive-bred individuals begin life in controlled aquarium conditions, they retain the same substantial adult size and long-term swimming requirements as wild Paracanthurus hepatus.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Captive-Bred; species native to the Indo-Pacific
Scientific Name: Paracanthurus hepatus

Tank Requirements

The Blue Hippo Tang requires a large aquarium with extensive open swimming room. Adults can reach approximately 12 inches in length, and a 180-gallon or larger aquarium with a long swimming footprint is recommended for permanent housing.

Arrange live rock to provide secure caves, overhangs, and crevices while maintaining broad, unobstructed swimming lanes. This species may retreat deeply into rockwork when startled or resting, so stable structures with appropriately sized hiding areas are valuable.

Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are important. A secure aquarium cover is recommended, particularly during acclimation or when territorial interactions occur.

Diet and Feeding

The Blue Hippo Tang naturally consumes substantial amounts of zooplankton while also taking algae, so a varied captive diet is preferable to relying on a single type of food.

Offer mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, quality frozen plankton blends, finely chopped marine foods, and high-quality marine pellets. Dried marine algae or nori should also be offered regularly, along with spirulina-based foods and other preparations formulated for surgeonfish.

Captive-bred specimens are raised in aquarium conditions and can be accustomed to prepared diets, but nutritional variety remains important throughout adulthood. Two or more smaller feedings each day work well for this active species.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Blue Hippo Tang is generally compatible with a broad range of marine community fish but should be considered semi-aggressive, particularly around other tangs and surgeonfish.

Suitable tankmates include clownfish, wrasses, anthias, rabbitfish, angelfish, gobies, and many other appropriately sized reef fish. Territorial disputes are more likely with other surgeonfish competing for similar swimming and feeding space.

Multiple tangs require additional aquarium volume, abundant food, and carefully planned introductions. As Blue Hippo Tangs mature, individuals that tolerated one another when small may become increasingly competitive.

Reef Compatibility

The Blue Hippo Tang is considered reef safe. It does not normally consume healthy coral tissue and is generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other common reef invertebrates.

Its active swimming behavior makes generous clearance around delicate coral structures beneficial. Stable rockwork and securely positioned coral colonies are especially important once the fish reaches adult size.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable conditions are more important than continually adjusting the aquarium to achieve an exact value. Maintain strong oxygenation, consistent salinity, efficient filtration, and dependable overall water quality.

Common Considerations

  • Large adult size: Paracanthurus hepatus can reach approximately 12 inches and requires a 180-gallon or larger aquarium with substantial swimming length.

  • Captive-bred origin: Aquacultured specimens are produced in captivity, but their eventual size and long-term space requirements are identical to those of the species as a whole.

  • Parasite sensitivity: Like many surgeonfish, Blue Hippo Tangs can be susceptible to common marine parasites, making careful quarantine and stable husbandry important.

  • Varied diet required: Natural feeding includes zooplankton as well as algae, so provide both quality protein-rich marine foods and regular marine algae.

  • Sharp caudal spine: The defensive spine near the base of the tail can cause injury, so use appropriate care during capture, transfer, and aquarium maintenance.
