FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

Is the White Banded Possum Wrasse truly reef-safe, and what small invertebrates is it most likely to eat?

Yes, it is generally considered reef-safe with corals and most larger decorative invertebrates, but it is not 100% invert-safe. It will usually ignore corals, feather dusters, and clam mantles, but it may prey on tiny crustaceans such as very small peppermint shrimp, baby cleaner shrimp, amphipods, copepods, and especially newly molted or miniature snails and worms if it can fit them in its mouth. It’s best with a mature tank that has a natural microfauna population.

What kind of tank setup helps a White Banded Possum Wrasse settle in and behave naturally?

A tank with lots of rockwork, caves, overhangs, and narrow crevices is ideal. This species spends much of its time weaving through rock and darting into shelter rather than swimming in open water. A tight-fitting lid is important because it can jump when startled. Fine sand is helpful, but the key is dense live rock with plenty of hiding spots and a peaceful environment.

What should I feed a White Banded Possum Wrasse, and why do many specimens refuse prepared food at first?

It does best on very small meaty foods such as enriched mysis shrimp, finely chopped frozen crustaceans, baby brine shrimp, copepods, and other tiny zooplankton-style foods. Many newly imported fish are shy and may ignore pellets or larger frozen foods because they are adapted to picking tiny prey from rockwork. Feeding small portions multiple times per day, especially at first, usually works better than one large feeding.

Can a White Banded Possum Wrasse be kept with other wrasses or aggressive fish?

It is peaceful and can be easily bullied by larger, faster, or aggressive tankmates. It does best with other calm fish, small gobies, blennies, firefish, and non-aggressive reef fish. With other wrasses, it can sometimes be kept with very peaceful species, but avoid fast, dominant wrasses like larger Halichoeres, Thalassoma, or aggressive fairy wrasses that may outcompete it for food or stress it constantly.

Why does my White Banded Possum Wrasse stay hidden most of the day, and is that normal?

Yes, that is normal behavior. This species is naturally secretive and often stays in the rockwork, coming out more at feeding time or in lower-light conditions. A healthy specimen may still spend much of the day tucked into caves, especially in a new tank or if tankmates are active. If it is eating well, has a rounded belly, and comes out periodically, hiding is usually just normal possum wrasse behavior rather than a problem.

Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse (Wetmorella nigropinnata)

The Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse is a charming nano reef fish prized for its cryptic behavior, intricate patterning, and peaceful temperament. Its slender body is decorated with alternating yellow to golden bands over a reddish-brown background, allowing it to blend seamlessly among rockwork and coral branches. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this diminutive wrasse spends its days carefully weaving through crevices in search of tiny prey, making it an endlessly fascinating addition to established reef aquariums.

Tank Requirements
A 20-gallon or larger aquarium with abundant live rock is recommended. Unlike many wrasses, the Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse does not require a sand bed for sleeping, instead retreating into rock crevices and caves at night. A mature aquarium with stable water quality, ample hiding places, and a secure lid provides the ideal environment for long-term success.

Color, Personality, and Hardiness
This species displays beautiful yellow to golden vertical bands over a warm reddish-brown body, accented by subtle facial markings and expressive eyes. Naturally shy and deliberate in its movements, it gradually becomes more visible as it settles into the aquarium. Despite its timid nature, the Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse is hardy in well-established reef systems and adapts readily when housed with peaceful tankmates.

Diet and Feeding
Feed a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine meats, and high-quality micro-pellets. This species actively hunts small crustaceans throughout the day, so regular feedings help supplement its natural foraging behavior. A diverse diet promotes excellent health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates and Behavior
Completely reef-safe and exceptionally peaceful, the Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse thrives alongside other gentle reef fishes. It should not be housed with aggressive or highly boisterous species that may intimidate it or outcompete it for food. Constantly exploring the rockwork with slow, methodical movements, this wrasse brings subtle activity and natural behavior to reef aquariums while remaining safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates.
