The Fiji Rose Belly Fairy Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus punctatus, is an elegant reef aquarium fish known for its finely spotted coloration and distinctive rosy lower body. Adults range from reddish-brown and rose to darker gray-red across the upper body, covered with numerous tiny pink to blue spots, while the lower portion contrasts in white to pale pink. Mature males become especially colorful and develop dramatically elongated pelvic fins, giving them a graceful appearance during swimming and social displays.
Fiji lies within the natural Western Pacific distribution of this species. Around its range, the Rose Belly Fairy Wrasse—also known as the Finespot Fairy Wrasse—inhabits coral and rubble reefs, particularly protected reef environments where it swims above the structure in search of small planktonic prey. It may also occur on more exposed reefs and across a relatively broad depth range.
Reaching approximately 5 inches as an adult, this active but generally peaceful saltwater fish is well suited to established reef aquariums. Its vivid coloration, constant movement, manageable adult size, and excellent coral compatibility make it an attractive choice for both mixed reefs and peaceful marine community aquariums.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Fiji / Western Pacific
Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus punctatus
Tank Requirements
Provide a mature marine aquarium with a combination of established live rock and generous open swimming space. Caves, overhangs, and protected areas within the rockwork give the wrasse secure locations to retreat at night or whenever it feels threatened.
Unlike many sand-burying wrasses, Cirrhilabrus punctatus does not require a deep sand bed for sleeping. It typically seeks shelter within rockwork instead, making aquascape structure more important than substrate depth.
A tightly fitted lid or fine mesh cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small openings, particularly when newly introduced, startled, or chased by tankmates.
Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, and stable water quality are ideal. Leave sufficient open water above and around the rockwork for its active daytime swimming behavior.
Diet and Feeding
The Rose Belly Fairy Wrasse is primarily a planktivore that naturally captures small organisms from the water column throughout the day.
Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, calanus, finely chopped marine seafood, and quality frozen plankton blends. Small high-quality marine pellets and flakes can also be incorporated once the fish is comfortably accepting prepared foods.
Foods that remain suspended in the water column for a short period encourage natural feeding behavior. Two to three smaller meals per day are preferable when practical and help maintain good body condition and coloration.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Fiji Rose Belly Fairy Wrasse is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and works well in community reef aquariums. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, anthias, peaceful tangs, and other non-aggressive marine species.
Some territorial displays may occur around other fairy wrasses, particularly between mature males or closely related Cirrhilabrus species. Multiple fairy wrasses can often be maintained successfully in larger systems when introductions are planned carefully and adequate hiding places are available.
A single specimen can be maintained successfully, and a male does not require females for long-term aquarium care. Avoid highly aggressive fish that may continually chase or intimidate this relatively peaceful wrasse.
Reef Compatibility
The Rose Belly Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe. It does not normally nip at healthy SPS or LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clams, or other sessile reef organisms.
Established ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally suitable tankmates. Tiny crustaceans and planktonic microfauna may naturally be consumed, but the species is not typically a threat to established ornamental invertebrates.
Its combination of small adult size, active coloration, and excellent coral compatibility makes it particularly well suited to mixed reef aquariums.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable temperature, salinity, oxygenation, and overall water quality are more important than maintaining an exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Secure lid is essential: Fairy wrasses are powerful jumpers and can escape through very small aquarium openings.
-
Fiji collection locality: Fiji is part of the species' natural Western Pacific distribution and does not require different husbandry from other Cirrhilabrus punctatus populations.
-
Coloration varies: Sex, maturity, mood, and individual variation can significantly influence red, rose, gray, and spotted coloration.
-
Frequent feeding: Several smaller portions of planktonic marine foods help support its active metabolism and maintain body condition.
-
Fairy wrasse compatibility: Use care when combining mature males with similar Cirrhilabrus species, particularly in smaller aquariums.
