Red Ogo Gracilaria Macroalgae - Reef Genetics
Goes well with:
Red Ogo Gracilaria (Gracilaria hayi) is a beautiful red macroalgae that serves as an excellent natural method of nutrient export in saltwater aquariums. As it grows, it consumes excess nitrate and phosphate from the water, helping to improve overall water quality and create a healthier, more stable reef environment. Its vibrant red coloration also makes it an attractive addition to refugiums and display macroalgae tanks.
Red Ogo thrives in a refugium with moderate to strong water flow, where it can gently tumble rather than remain stationary. This tumbling motion helps expose all sides of the algae to light, prevents detritus from collecting within the branches, and promotes even, healthy growth. While it can survive without tumbling, consistent movement typically results in faster growth and better overall health.
Providing adequate lighting is essential for long-term success. A quality refugium or horticultural LED with a spectrum designed for macroalgae growth will encourage vibrant coloration and rapid nutrient uptake. Most hobbyists run their refugium lighting on a reverse daylight schedule to help stabilize pH, though Red Ogo will also thrive under a standard daily photoperiod of 10–16 hours.
As the algae grows, periodic harvesting is recommended. Removing a portion of the macroalgae exports the nutrients it has absorbed from the system, making Red Ogo an effective and natural means of controlling nitrate and phosphate levels. It is also an excellent supplemental food source for many herbivorous fish, including tangs, rabbitfish, and angelfish, which readily graze on its soft branches.
Whether you’re looking to improve nutrient control, cultivate a healthy refugium, or simply add a splash of natural color to your aquarium, Red Ogo Gracilaria is an easy-to-maintain and highly beneficial macroalgae for reef and marine aquariums.
