Will a Radiant Wrasse (Halichoeres iridis) bury itself in the sand at night, and what kind of substrate do I need to keep it safely?
Yes. Radiant Wrasses are sand-sleepers and will bury themselves when stressed, at night, and often when first introduced. A fine, soft sand bed is strongly recommended; they need enough depth to fully submerge, ideally at least 2–3 inches in most of the tank and deeper in a few areas if possible. Coarse crushed coral can damage their delicate body and gills and may prevent normal burrowing.
Is a Radiant Wrasse truly reef-safe, and which invertebrates are most at risk?
Mostly yes, but with important caveats. Radiant Wrasses are generally considered reef-safe with corals, but they are opportunistic predators of small mobile invertebrates. They may eat bristleworms, pyramid snails, small ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, and very small snails. Larger cleaner shrimp are sometimes left alone, but not guaranteed. If you keep prized nano-shrimp or tiny decorative crabs, there is a real risk.
How can I tell the difference between a male and female Radiant Wrasse, and does sex change matter in the aquarium?
Radiant Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning females can transition to males. Males are typically more intensely colored, especially with a brighter orange-red belly and more vivid striping, while females and juveniles are usually a bit duller. In aquariums, keeping one specimen usually means you’ll get whichever sex it was at purchase; if multiple are kept, social conditions can influence sex change and territorial behavior.
What is the proper feeding strategy for a Radiant Wrasse, and can it survive on frozen foods alone?
They are active microcarnivores that do best with frequent small feedings and a varied diet. They naturally pick at small crustaceans, worms, and other benthic prey, so in captivity they should get enriched frozen mysis, finely chopped seafood, high-quality carnivore pellets, and occasional live foods if needed during acclimation. Frozen foods alone can sustain many individuals if varied and nutrient-rich, but they usually thrive better when there is also a healthy microfauna population in the tank.
Can a Radiant Wrasse be kept in a reef with other wrasses, and what tankmates cause the most issues?
Yes, but only with careful planning. Radiant Wrasses can be territorial toward similar-shaped wrasses, especially other Halichoeres species or aggressive sand-dwellers, and they may also be bullied by larger, dominant wrasses like some Thalassoma species. They usually do best with peaceful-to-moderate tankmates in a tank large enough to give them swimming room and multiple hiding spots. They are not ideal for cramped tanks with multiple competitive wrasses.

The Radiant Wrasse, Halichoeres iridis, is an exceptionally colorful saltwater fish recognized for its deep burgundy to reddish body, brilliant yellow-orange head, and intricate green facial markings. A pale yellow to white dorsal margin creates a striking contrast along the upper body, while mature specimens develop increasingly vivid coloration as they settle into aquarium life. Its combination of rich colors and constant foraging activity makes it one of the most distinctive members of the genus Halichoeres.
Native to the western Indian Ocean, the species occurs along the East African coast as well as Madagascar, the Seychelles, and the Chagos Archipelago. Radiant Wrasses naturally inhabit steep seaward reefs associated with sand and rubble, where they spend daylight hours searching for small invertebrate prey before burying themselves in the substrate at night. Tank Requirements
The Radiant Wrasse should be maintained in a mature marine aquarium with established live rock, open swimming space, and a suitable bed of fine sand. Adults reach approximately 4.5 inches, and a 50-gallon or larger aquarium provides appropriate long-term territory.
Provide at least 2–3 inches of soft, fine sand so the fish can bury itself completely when sleeping, frightened, or stressed. Coarse gravel and sharp substrates should be avoided because repeated burrowing may cause abrasions.
Rockwork should include caves, overhangs, and numerous foraging surfaces while leaving sufficient open space for active swimming. A mature aquarium with established populations of copepods and other microfauna is particularly beneficial during acclimation.
A tightly fitted mesh or solid cover is essential. Like many Halichoeres wrasses, the Radiant Wrasse is an accomplished jumper and may escape through small openings around equipment or plumbing.
Diet and Feeding
The Radiant Wrasse is a carnivore that naturally searches reef structure and substrate for small crustaceans, worms, mollusks, and other benthic invertebrates.
Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped shrimp, clam, and quality frozen marine blends. Appropriately sized carnivore pellets can also be incorporated once readily accepted.
Newly introduced specimens can be reluctant to accept prepared foods. Live copepods or enriched live brine shrimp may help stimulate an initial feeding response while the fish becomes accustomed to aquarium foods.
Feed two to three smaller meals per day once established. Mature live rock and a healthy microfauna population provide additional opportunities for natural foraging between prepared meals.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Radiant Wrasse is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and is best maintained with peaceful to moderately assertive tankmates.
Suitable companions include clownfish, gobies, blennies, anthias, fairy wrasses, flasher wrasses, peaceful tangs, and other community-oriented marine species. Avoid highly aggressive fish that may continually chase the wrasse or prevent it from feeding during acclimation.
Some territorial behavior may occur toward other Halichoeres wrasses or similarly shaped species. Multiple wrasses should be introduced thoughtfully and provided with sufficient space, shelter, and feeding opportunities.
Reef Compatibility
The Radiant Wrasse is best classified as reef safe with caution. It generally leaves healthy corals alone and can be an excellent addition to coral-dominated reef aquariums.
Its natural diet includes small invertebrates, however. Feather dusters, tubeworms, very small shrimp, worms, and other vulnerable invertebrates may be investigated or eaten. Naturally occurring copepods and other small crustaceans will also be consumed during normal foraging.
The species may prey on certain unwanted reef organisms, including some small worms and snails, but individual feeding preferences vary and it should not be purchased solely for pest control.
