Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.

The Punctato Butterflyfish, Chaetodon punctatofasciatus, is an attractive and intricately patterned saltwater fish with a warm yellow-tan body covered in rows of dark spots and short vertical bands. A striking orange band edged in black passes through the eye, while yellow fins and a bright orange caudal peduncle add additional color. Its unusual combination of spotting and striping gives this species a distinctive appearance among marine aquarium butterflyfish.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species occurs from Christmas Island eastward through Micronesia to the Line Islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and south to the northern Great Barrier Reef. It is most commonly found in clear, coral-rich lagoon and seaward reef habitats, where individuals browse continuously across reef surfaces for algae, coral tissue, and small benthic invertebrates.

Reaching approximately 5 inches as an adult, the Punctato Butterflyfish is a manageable but active butterflyfish for a mature fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium. Its generally peaceful temperament, compact adult size, and attractive pattern make it an appealing community marine fish, although its natural feeding habits make it unsuitable for most reef aquariums containing corals and desirable sessile invertebrates.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: No
Region: Indo-Pacific
Scientific Name: Chaetodon punctatofasciatus

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature marine aquarium with established live rock, multiple caves and sheltered areas, and sufficient open swimming space. The Punctato Butterflyfish spends much of its time moving between reef structure and exposed areas while searching surfaces for food.

Established rockwork is especially beneficial because it provides natural grazing and browsing opportunities. Avoid excessively dense aquascaping that prevents the fish from swimming comfortably throughout the aquarium.

Moderate water movement, excellent oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are recommended. Butterflyfish generally settle more readily into established systems than newly cycled aquariums, particularly when natural growth is present on the rockwork.

A secure aquarium cover is advisable, especially during acclimation when a newly introduced specimen may make sudden movements if startled.

Diet and Feeding

The Punctato Butterflyfish is an omnivorous reef browser that naturally consumes filamentous algae, coral polyps, worms, and a variety of other small benthic invertebrates.

In captivity, offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, krill, and quality frozen marine blends. Butterflyfish preparations containing marine invertebrate ingredients are also useful.

Supplement meaty foods with spirulina-based preparations, marine algae, and quality omnivore pellets once the fish is accepting prepared foods consistently. Newly introduced specimens may respond particularly well to clam or mussel presented on the shell.

Feed two to three smaller meals daily when practical. Frequent feeding helps maintain body condition and complements the species' natural habit of browsing throughout the day.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Punctato Butterflyfish is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and can be maintained with many similarly sized community species. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, peaceful wrasses, tangs, rabbitfish, gobies, and appropriately compatible angelfish.

Territorial behavior may occur toward other butterflyfish, particularly closely related or similarly patterned species. A single specimen is the simplest arrangement for most aquariums.

Pairs are commonly observed in nature, and an established compatible pair can potentially be maintained in a sufficiently spacious system. Two unrelated specimens should not automatically be expected to form a peaceful pair.

Avoid highly aggressive or excessively competitive fish that may intimidate the butterflyfish or prevent it from feeding adequately.

Reef Compatibility

The Punctato Butterflyfish is not considered reef safe. Coral polyps form part of its natural diet, and captive specimens may nip at or consume both stony and soft corals.

Tubeworms, zoanthids, anemones, clam mantles, and other exposed or sessile invertebrates may also be investigated. Individual behavior varies, but regular feeding does not guarantee that a specimen will ignore desirable reef organisms.

A fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium provides the most predictable long-term environment for this species.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable salinity, good oxygenation, and consistently clean water are more important than attempting to maintain an exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Not reef safe: Stony and soft corals, tubeworms, and other sessile invertebrates may be nipped or consumed.

  • Mature rockwork preferred: Established surfaces provide natural browsing opportunities and can help newly introduced specimens acclimate.

  • Varied diet is important: Offer both marine-based meaty foods and algae-rich preparations.

  • Butterflyfish compatibility: Territorial behavior can occur toward similar butterflyfish, particularly in limited space.

  • Frequent feeding: Two to three smaller meals per day help support long-term body condition and natural browsing behavior.
