Is a Neon Wrasse really reef-safe, or will it eat my snails, shrimp, and tiny crabs?
Mostly yes with caution, but not completely “safe with all inverts.” A Neon Wrasse is a hunter of small crustaceans and worms, so it may eat tiny shrimp, ornamental fan worms, bristle worms, very small hermits, and fragile snails if it gets the chance. It is usually fine with corals and larger tankmates. In a reef, it is best kept with sturdy invertebrates and plenty of live rock so it can forage naturally.
Do Neon Wrasses need a sand bed to sleep in?
Yes, a soft sand bed is strongly recommended. Neon Wrasses are burrowing/sleeping wrasses and commonly bury themselves in sand at night or when startled. Without sand, they can become stressed, injure themselves, or fail to settle properly. A fine sand bed of at least a couple inches is ideal.
Why does my Neon Wrasse suddenly stay hidden or refuse food after being added to the tank?
That is very common during acclimation. Neon Wrasses are often nervous in new environments and may stay buried, dart into rockwork, or ignore food for a few days. They usually settle faster in a calm tank with sand, lots of cover, and quiet tankmates. Offer small meaty foods like frozen mysis, chopped seafood, enriched brine, and finely prepared pellets; once it starts eating, they often become bold and active.
What size tank and aquascape does a Neon Wrasse need to stay healthy long term?
They do best in a medium-to-large marine aquarium with open swimming space, a secure lid, and plenty of rock structure for cover. A tight-fitting top is essential because wrasses are excellent jumpers. The tank should have a mature sand bed and enough live rock to support their constant picking behavior. They are active fish and do poorly in cramped, sparsely decorated setups.
Can Neon Wrasses be kept with other wrasses or aggressive fish?
Sometimes, but tankmate selection matters a lot. They are generally peaceful-to-semi-aggressive and can be bullied by fast, dominant fish. They may also compete with or be intimidated by other wrasses, especially similar-shaped species. Best results come with calm to moderately active tankmates that won’t outcompete them for food or harass them at feeding time. Introducing them before more aggressive fish usually helps.

The juvenile Neon Wrasse, Halichoeres garnoti, is an exceptionally colorful saltwater fish distinguished by a brilliant yellow to golden-orange body and an electric turquoise-blue stripe extending from the head toward the tail. This striking juvenile coloration changes dramatically with maturity, eventually developing into the darker, more complex yellow, blue, green, and black patterning characteristic of adult Yellowhead Wrasses.
Native to the tropical Western Atlantic, including Bermuda, Florida, the Bahamas, Caribbean, and portions of the western Atlantic south toward Brazil, this species inhabits coral reefs, rocky ledges, and sandy reef environments. Juveniles actively forage around reef structure for small benthic invertebrates while remaining close to areas where they can quickly seek shelter.
Reaching roughly 7–8 inches as an adult, the Neon Wrasse is an active marine aquarium fish that requires adequate swimming room, mature rockwork, and a soft sand bed. It generally leaves healthy corals alone, but its natural hunting behavior can place ornamental crustaceans and other small invertebrates at risk.

Tank Requirements
Provide a mature saltwater aquarium with ample open swimming space, established live rock, and numerous caves and crevices for exploration and shelter. This is an active wrasse that spends much of the daylight period moving around the aquarium in search of food.
A soft sand bed approximately 2–3 inches deep is important. Like many Halichoeres wrasses, the Neon Wrasse buries itself beneath the substrate at night and may also disappear into the sand when frightened or during initial acclimation. Avoid coarse or sharp substrates that could cause abrasions.
Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, and stable water quality are recommended. Rockwork should be secure but arranged with plenty of accessible surfaces for natural foraging.
A tightly fitted lid or fine mesh cover is essential. Wrasses are accomplished jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small openings.
Diet and Feeding
The Neon Wrasse is a carnivore that naturally searches reef and sandy habitats for small benthic invertebrates, including crustaceans, worms, mollusks, and other suitably sized prey.
Offer a varied captive diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, copepods, finely chopped shrimp, clam, and quality frozen marine carnivore blends. High-quality marine pellets and flakes can also be incorporated once the fish is feeding confidently.
Feed smaller specimens two to three times daily when practical. Regular varied feeding supports growth and body condition, although it will not eliminate the wrasse's instinct to hunt small invertebrates within the aquarium.
Temperament and Tankmates
The juvenile Neon Wrasse is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and works well with many community species, including clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, tangs, dwarf angelfish, and other appropriately compatible wrasses.
Territorial behavior may increase toward other Halichoeres wrasses or members of its own species as the fish matures. A single specimen is generally the simplest arrangement for most aquariums.
Avoid highly aggressive tankmates that may repeatedly chase the juvenile or prevent it from feeding. Adequate rockwork and sand provide important escape options while a new specimen establishes itself.
Reef Compatibility
The Neon Wrasse is reef safe with caution. It does not normally target healthy SPS, LPS, or soft coral tissue, making it compatible with corals from a feeding standpoint.
The primary concern is mobile and exposed invertebrates. Small ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, fan worms, snails, and other suitably sized animals may be investigated or consumed, particularly as the wrasse grows.
It is therefore a good candidate for coral-focused reef aquariums where some risk to smaller ornamental invertebrates is acceptable.
