FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

Is the Yellowtail Tubelip Cleaner Wrasse a good fish for a typical home reef aquarium?

Usually no. This species is a highly specialized obligate cleaner wrasse that naturally feeds by picking parasites and mucus from other fish. In captivity, it often refuses prepared foods and can slowly starve even in large, well-established aquariums. It is generally only suitable for advanced aquarists with very large reef systems and a proven plan for feeding.

Will a Yellowtail Tubelip Cleaner Wrasse eat parasites off my fish in a home aquarium?

Sometimes it will perform cleaning behavior, especially if it recognizes large, non-aggressive tankmates, but it should not be relied on as a parasite treatment. In home aquariums, many specimens spend less time cleaning and more time searching for natural biofilm or harassing fish for slime. It is not a replacement for quarantine, proper husbandry, or actual disease management.

What tank size and environment does a Yellowtail Tubelip Cleaner Wrasse need?

This wrasse needs a large, mature reef aquarium with stable water quality, excellent oxygenation, and plenty of swimming space. Bigger is better; small or new tanks are poor choices. A sandbed and lots of rockwork are useful, but the tank must also have open areas so it can move and set up cleaning stations. Strong, peaceful tankmates are ideal, while aggressive wrasses, dottybacks, and boisterous feeders can stress or outcompete it.

What do you feed a Yellowtail Tubelip Cleaner Wrasse if it won’t accept normal aquarium foods?

Start by offering very small, frequent feedings of live or frozen foods such as enriched mysis, copepods, amphipods, and finely chopped marine fare. Some individuals can be trained onto prepared foods, but many never fully convert. A refugium that continuously produces small crustaceans can help, but it is not enough by itself for long-term success. Watch body condition closely, because weight loss can happen before the fish looks obviously thin.

Can Yellowtail Tubelip Cleaner Wrasse be kept with other cleaner wrasses or aggressive reef fish?

It can be risky. Keeping it with other cleaner wrasses often leads to competition, feeding issues, or territorial conflict unless the aquarium is very large. With aggressive or overly curious fish, the wrasse may be bullied or may be unable to establish a cleaning station. The best tankmates are calm, reef-safe fish that tolerate inspection and do not harass the wrasse. Avoid mixing it with fish that are known to eat small wrasses, such as many large predatory species.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Yellowtail Cleaner Wrasse, Diproctacanthus xanthurus, is a distinctive saltwater fish recognized by its pearly white body, bold horizontal black striping, and bright yellow tail. Juveniles display stronger dark striping that changes as the fish matures, while adults develop the characteristic high-contrast white, black, and yellow coloration. Its thick, fleshy lips are adapted for specialized feeding and give rise to another common name, the Yellowtail Tubelip Wrasse.

Native to the Western Central Pacific, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Palau, New Guinea, and the Great Barrier Reef, this species inhabits coral-rich lagoons and sheltered seaward reefs. Despite its common name, it should not be confused with obligate cleaner wrasses such as Labroides dimidiatus. Juveniles may clean ectoparasites from other fish, but this behavior diminishes with maturity as the natural diet shifts heavily toward coral polyps. This unusual feeding ecology makes the species best suited to experienced aquarists and fish-only marine aquariums rather than traditional reef displays.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Expert Only
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Corallivore / Carnivore
Reef Safe: No
Region: Western Central Pacific
Scientific Name: Diproctacanthus xanthurus

Tank Requirements

The Yellowtail Cleaner Wrasse should be maintained in an established marine aquarium with substantial rockwork and adequate open swimming space. Although adults reach only about 4 inches, this is an active fish that benefits from a 55-gallon or larger aquarium with room to cruise and forage.

Provide caves, overhangs, and crevices throughout the rockwork so the fish has secure places to retreat when startled or resting. Open swimming areas should remain available around the aquascape.

Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, dependable filtration, and stable water quality are recommended. A mature system is preferable to a newly established aquarium.

A tightly fitted aquarium cover is important, as wrasses are capable jumpers and may escape through small openings around equipment or plumbing.

Diet and Feeding

The natural feeding ecology of this species requires special consideration. Juveniles may remove ectoparasites from other fish, but adults feed predominantly on coral polyps in the wild.

Captive specimens may learn to accept prepared foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, frozen marine blends, and appropriately sized carnivore pellets. Foods should be small enough for the fish's relatively narrow mouth.

Offer two to three smaller meals per day and closely monitor body condition. A specimen accepting prepared food should still be considered a specialized feeder, particularly during acclimation.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Yellowtail Cleaner Wrasse is generally peaceful toward other marine fish and can coexist with a variety of similarly peaceful or moderately assertive tankmates.

Suitable companions include clownfish, tangs, angelfish, rabbitfish, cardinalfish, and other appropriately sized community fish. Avoid highly aggressive species that may intimidate the wrasse or prevent it from feeding consistently.

Juveniles may attempt to clean other fish, but this behavior should not be expected to continue into adulthood. The species should not be purchased primarily as a parasite-control fish.

Reef Compatibility

The Yellowtail Cleaner Wrasse is not reef safe. Adult Diproctacanthus xanthurus naturally feeds heavily on coral polyps and can damage both stony and soft corals.

SPS corals, LPS corals, zoanthids, and other sessile reef organisms may be repeatedly picked at or consumed. Feeding the fish heavily with prepared foods does not eliminate this natural corallivorous behavior.

For long-term housing, this species is much better suited to a fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium than a coral-dominated reef system.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers. Maintain consistent salinity and temperature along with excellent oxygenation, efficient biological filtration, and dependable water quality.

Common Considerations

  • Not a true adult cleaner wrasse: Cleaning behavior occurs primarily when young and generally diminishes as the fish matures.

  • Natural coral predator: Adults feed heavily on coral polyps, making this species unsuitable for most reef aquariums.

  • Specialized feeding ecology: Carefully monitor newly introduced specimens to ensure they accept adequate prepared foods and maintain body condition.

  • Active swimmer: Provide open swimming space along with abundant secure rockwork and shelter.

  • Jumping risk: A tightly fitted aquarium cover is strongly recommended, including around plumbing and equipment openings.
