Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.

The male Green Bird Wrasse, Gomphosus varius, is a spectacular saltwater fish recognized by its intense emerald to blue-green coloration and unmistakable elongated, bird-like snout. Mature males develop considerably richer green coloration than females and juveniles, often with blue accents along the fins and a brilliant yellow-green patch around the pectoral-fin base. Its unusual profile and energetic swimming style make it an impressive centerpiece in a large marine aquarium.

Native to tropical Indo-Pacific reefs from the Cocos-Keeling region eastward through the Pacific to Hawaii and French Polynesia, this species inhabits coral-rich lagoons and seaward reefs. It spends much of the day actively searching reef structure for crustaceans, mollusks, brittle stars, and other small prey.

Reaching approximately 12 inches as an adult, the Green Bird Wrasse is a powerful, active marine aquarium fish requiring substantial swimming room. It can be maintained around corals but is best described as reef safe with caution because ornamental crustaceans and other mobile invertebrates may become prey.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-Pacific – Cocos-Keeling to Central Pacific
Scientific Name: Gomphosus varius

Tank Requirements

Provide a spacious aquarium with extensive open swimming room and substantial rockwork containing caves, ledges, and sheltered retreats. The Green Bird Wrasse is an energetic fish that cruises continuously during daylight hours, so aquarium length and unobstructed swimming space are especially important.

Stable rock structures are recommended because larger specimens actively investigate crevices while hunting for food. An open sandy area can be included, although this species does not depend on a deep sand bed for sleeping in the same way as many Halichoeres wrasses.

Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, and efficient filtration are ideal. A tightly fitted lid or secure mesh cover is essential, as active wrasses are capable jumpers and may escape through surprisingly small openings.

Diet and Feeding

The Green Bird Wrasse is a carnivorous predator that naturally feeds heavily on small benthic crustaceans, along with mollusks, brittle stars, and occasional small fish.

Offer a varied captive diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, squid, and other appropriately sized marine seafood. High-quality carnivore pellets and frozen marine blends can also be included once the fish readily accepts prepared foods.

Feed one to two substantial meals daily, adjusting portions according to body condition and activity. Smaller specimens may benefit from somewhat more frequent feeding.

Temperament and Tankmates

The male Green Bird Wrasse is active, confident, and best considered semi-aggressive. It generally ignores robust fish that cannot be viewed as prey but may intimidate very small or timid tankmates through its constant movement and feeding activity.

Suitable companions include appropriately sized tangs, rabbitfish, larger angelfish, robust wrasses, triggerfish with compatible temperaments, and other medium to large marine fish.

Small fish should be selected with caution, particularly as the wrasse matures. Housing multiple Bird Wrasses or similarly assertive wrasses requires considerably more space and careful introduction planning.

Reef Compatibility

The Green Bird Wrasse is reef safe with caution. It does not normally feed on healthy coral tissue and can be maintained in aquariums containing SPS, LPS, and soft corals.

The primary concern is predation on mobile invertebrates. Ornamental shrimp, small crabs, hermit crabs, snails, brittle stars, and other suitably sized animals may be hunted and consumed. Very small fish may also be at risk from a large adult.

For this reason, it is best suited to a coral aquarium where ornamental crustaceans are not a priority or to a fish-only-with-live-rock system.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable salinity, strong oxygenation, and consistently good water quality are more important than maintaining exact values within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Large, active wrasse: Adults reach approximately 12 inches and require generous horizontal swimming space.

  • Male coloration: Mature males develop the characteristic emerald to blue-green coloration and elongated bird-like snout.

  • Predatory toward invertebrates: Shrimp, crabs, brittle stars, mollusks, and other mobile invertebrates may become prey.

  • Secure lid essential: This active wrasse can jump from uncovered aquariums.

  • Robust tankmates preferred: Small or timid fish may be intimidated by the activity and feeding behavior of a mature male.
