Common Cleaner Wrasse

The Common Cleaner Wrasse, Labroides dimidiatus, also known as the Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse, is one of the most recognizable and behaviorally fascinating saltwater fish found on tropical coral reefs. Its slender body features a bold black horizontal stripe extending from the snout through the tail, bordered by brilliant electric blue to pale blue coloration. The streamlined profile and constant, purposeful swimming make it an exceptionally active addition to a marine aquarium.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, East Africa, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, Australia, southern Japan, and islands throughout the central Pacific, this species inhabits coral-rich lagoons, reef flats, and seaward reefs. In nature, it establishes cleaning stations where larger fish deliberately approach to have parasitic crustaceans, damaged tissue, and mucus removed from their bodies.

Reaching approximately 5.5 inches as an adult, the Common Cleaner Wrasse is not difficult because of its size but because of its highly specialized natural diet. Experienced aquarists who obtain a specimen already accepting prepared foods can maintain this fascinating reef aquarium fish successfully, but frequent feeding and careful observation of body condition are essential.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature marine aquarium with established live rock, numerous caves and crevices, and adequate open swimming space. The Common Cleaner Wrasse remains active throughout the day and frequently moves throughout the aquarium searching for feeding opportunities and interacting with other fish.

Rockwork should offer secure nighttime retreats while leaving open areas where the wrasse can establish its characteristic cleaning activity. A mature community aquarium containing compatible fish is generally more appropriate than a sparsely stocked system.

Moderate water movement, excellent oxygenation, and stable water quality are recommended. This species does not require a deep sand bed for sleeping, instead seeking shelter within reef structure at night.

A tightly fitted lid or fine mesh cover is essential. Cleaner wrasses are agile jumpers and may escape through small openings, especially when startled or newly introduced.

Diet and Feeding

The Common Cleaner Wrasse has a highly specialized natural diet consisting primarily of parasitic crustaceans and mucus removed from other fish. This feeding specialization is the primary challenge associated with keeping the species in captivity.

Select specimens that are already feeding aggressively on prepared aquarium foods whenever possible. Offer small mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, calanus, finely chopped shrimp and other marine seafood, and quality frozen plankton blends. Small high-quality marine pellets may also be accepted by well-acclimated individuals.

Several small meals throughout the day are strongly recommended. A Cleaner Wrasse should not be expected to survive solely by removing parasites from aquarium tankmates, as a typical home aquarium cannot provide the continuous natural food supply available on a wild reef.

Monitor body condition carefully. A specimen that appears active but gradually becomes thin may not be receiving sufficient nutrition despite occasionally accepting food.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Common Cleaner Wrasse is generally peaceful and interacts unusually closely with other fish because of its natural cleaning behavior. Larger fish may actively present themselves to the wrasse, allowing it to inspect the skin, fins, mouth, and occasionally gill area.

Suitable tankmates include tangs, angelfish, butterflyfish, rabbitfish, wrasses, clownfish, anthias, and many other peaceful to semi-aggressive marine species. Predatory fish may sometimes recognize cleaner wrasses as beneficial rather than prey, but compatibility with large predators should never be assumed.

Keeping a single specimen is generally the simplest arrangement. In nature, cleaner wrasses may occur as pairs or within structured social groups, but multiple individuals require adequate space and appropriate social compatibility.

Avoid tankmates that aggressively harass the wrasse or prevent it from obtaining prepared foods at feeding time.

Reef Compatibility

The Common Cleaner Wrasse is considered reef safe. It does not normally damage healthy SPS or LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clams, or other sessile reef organisms.

Established ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally safe. Its attention is primarily directed toward small planktonic foods and material collected from the bodies of fish rather than ornamental reef invertebrates.

Its excellent coral compatibility makes it suitable for reef aquariums, provided the aquarist can meet its specialized nutritional requirements.
