Yes. Like most Anampses wrasses, it is a burying wrasse and needs a fine sand bed to sleep in and to feel secure. Without sand, it can become extremely stressed, refuse food, and may injure itself trying to wedge into rockwork. Provide several inches of fine, soft sand with easy access from the water column, and expect it to disappear into the substrate at night or when startled.
What tank size is realistically appropriate for an adult Blue Spotted Tamarin Wrasse?
For a single adult, think in the range of 6 feet long and 125 gallons or larger, with more space being better. They are active swimmers, constantly cruising the tank and exploring every section. Smaller tanks can work only for very small juveniles short term, but long-term they need length more than height, plus open swimming room and plenty of sand.

The Blue-spotted Wrasse, Anampses caeruleopunctatus, is a spectacular saltwater fish distinguished by its intricate turquoise-blue spotting and maze-like facial markings. Coloration changes considerably with sex and maturity: females and initial-phase individuals are generally reddish-brown to olive with numerous brilliant blue spots, while mature males develop deeper olive-green coloration with intense blue lines and spotting across the head, body, and fins. Its elaborate pattern and graceful swimming style make it an impressive centerpiece for large marine aquariums.
Native across a broad Indo-Pacific range from the Red Sea and eastern Africa to Japan, Australia, and Easter Island, this species inhabits coral and rocky reefs, particularly areas exposed to strong surge. It spends the daylight hours actively searching the reef for small benthic invertebrates and planktonic prey before burying itself in sand at night. Tank Requirements
The Blue-spotted Wrasse requires a large, mature aquarium with extensive swimming room, substantial rockwork, and a deep area of fine sand. Adults can reach approximately 16–17 inches, making a 180-gallon or larger aquarium appropriate for long-term housing.
Provide approximately 3–4 inches of fine, soft sand so the wrasse can bury itself completely when sleeping, frightened, or stressed. Coarse gravel and sharp substrates should be avoided because repeated burrowing can cause abrasions.
Rockwork should offer numerous caves, overhangs, and natural foraging areas while leaving generous open swimming space. A mature system with established populations of small crustaceans and other microfauna is strongly preferred.
A tightly fitted lid or mesh cover is essential. Anampses wrasses are powerful jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small openings.
Diet and Feeding
The Blue-spotted Wrasse is a carnivore that naturally feeds on zooplankton and a variety of small benthic invertebrates found around reef structure.
Offer mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped shrimp, clam, squid, krill, and quality frozen marine blends. Small crustaceans and other naturally occurring prey within mature live rock can provide valuable supplemental feeding opportunities.
Newly imported specimens may be reluctant to accept prepared foods, making feeding during acclimation one of the greatest challenges with this species. Live copepods, enriched live brine shrimp, or other moving foods may help stimulate an initial feeding response.
Once established, feed two to three smaller meals per day to support its active foraging behavior and maintain good body condition.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Blue-spotted Wrasse is generally manageable with unrelated marine fish but may become territorial toward other wrasses, particularly similar Anampses species or individuals of the same sex.
Suitable tankmates include tangs, rabbitfish, angelfish, clownfish, anthias, and other appropriately sized peaceful to semi-aggressive marine fish. Avoid highly aggressive species that may intimidate a newly introduced specimen or prevent it from feeding.
For most aquariums, keeping a single specimen is the safest approach. Multiple large Anampses wrasses require substantially more space and careful consideration of sex and species compatibility.
Reef Compatibility
The Blue-spotted Wrasse is reef safe with caution. It generally leaves healthy corals alone, but its natural diet includes small benthic invertebrates.
Ornamental shrimp, small crabs, worms, feather dusters, small snails, and other vulnerable invertebrates may be investigated or eaten, especially as the wrasse becomes larger. Clams and other sessile invertebrates may also receive exploratory picking from some individuals.
This species is therefore better suited to coral-focused reef aquariums where the potential loss of smaller ornamental invertebrates is understood.
