FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

How many Tricolor Anthias should I keep together, and what sex ratio works best in a home aquarium?

Keep them in a group, not singly. A good starting group is 1 male with 3–6 females, or an all-female group if you can’t source a confirmed male. They do best with a harem structure, and aggression is much lower when the group is large enough to spread out attention. In smaller tanks, only one male should be kept. If a dominant female transitions to male, expect temporary chasing and color intensification.

What should I feed Tricolor Anthias to keep their color and body condition from fading?

Feed multiple small meals daily, ideally 3–5 times a day. They are plankton pickers and need frequent high-quality, small particle foods: enriched frozen mysis, finely chopped seafood, copepods, roe, quality nano pellets, and zooplankton-based frozen foods. Their color and condition decline quickly on one feeding a day or on large foods they struggle to take. A varied, protein-rich diet with frequent feeding is the key to keeping them vibrant and active.

Why do Tricolor Anthias often waste away in quarantine or shortly after purchase?

The biggest reason is starvation from stress and refusal to eat. They are sensitive to shipping and often arrive with depleted energy reserves. In quarantine, provide extremely calm conditions, low competition, and frequent small feedings of tempting foods like live copepods, live enriched brine, frozen mysis, and roe. Use moderate lighting, strong aeration, and stable salinity. If they do not eat within the first few days, they can decline rapidly, so quarantine should be set up with feeding success as the top priority.

What kind of tank setup and water movement do Tricolor Anthias prefer?

They prefer a mature reef tank with strong, chaotic flow and lots of open swimming space, plus rockwork that creates overhangs and escape routes. They are not a “hide in caves all day” species; they spend much of their time in the water column, darting in and out of current. A tightly covered tank is essential because they are strong jumpers, especially when startled or when males are establishing territory. Stable, well-oxygenated water is more important than pristine-looking aquascape.

Can Tricolor Anthias be kept with more aggressive reef fish like tangs, wrasses, or dwarf angels?

Yes, but tankmate choice matters. They usually do well with peaceful-to-moderately assertive reef fish, including many tangs, fairy and flasher wrasses, gobies, and dwarf angels, as long as the anthias are not outcompeted at feeding time. Avoid overly aggressive or hyperactive feeders that monopolize food, because anthias need frequent meals and can lose condition fast. Their best tankmates are fish that won’t harass them and won’t prevent them from eating multiple times a day.

Description

The male Tricolor Anthias (Pseudanthias rubrizonatus), also known as the Red-Belted Anthias or Redband Anthias, is a striking saltwater fish recognized for its vivid combination of pink, orange, red, and yellow coloration. Mature males typically display a pinkish-orange head and forward body, a bold bright-red vertical band through the middle of the body, and a yellowish posterior section. This distinctive three-color pattern gives the species its popular Tricolor Anthias name and makes mature males especially eye-catching in a brightly illuminated reef aquarium.

Native to the Indo-West Pacific, this species ranges from the Andaman Sea through the western Pacific to the Solomon Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. It inhabits coral-rich reefs, rubble areas, and outer reef slopes where groups swim above the reef structure and capture zooplankton from the passing current.

The male Tricolor Anthias is an active, confident marine aquarium fish that works well in established reef aquariums and spacious fish-only systems. It is generally more assertive than many delicate anthias species, particularly toward other anthias and competing planktivores, so generous swimming space and careful tankmate selection are important.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 100 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-West Pacific – Andaman Sea to Solomon Islands, southern Japan to Great Barrier Reef
Scientific Name: Pseudanthias rubrizonatus

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature, well-established marine aquarium with substantial open swimming space above and around the rockwork. Tricolor Anthias are active water-column swimmers that spend much of the day cruising through open areas rather than remaining close to the substrate.

Arrange live rock to provide caves, ledges, overhangs, and shaded retreats while preserving generous unobstructed swimming room. These protected areas provide nighttime shelter and allow the fish to retreat from territorial interactions when necessary.

Moderate to strong, well-distributed water movement is ideal and helps recreate the current-rich reef environments where this species naturally feeds. Good oxygenation and efficient filtration are also important because multiple daily feedings can increase nutrient input.

A securely fitted mesh screen or aquarium lid is recommended, as anthias may jump when startled or chased.

Diet and Feeding

The Tricolor Anthias is a carnivorous planktivore that naturally feeds on zooplankton and small crustaceans suspended in the water column.

Offer a varied diet including enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, calanus, frozen plankton blends, finely chopped marine seafood, and appropriately sized high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Foods that remain suspended in the water column encourage natural feeding behavior.

Provide two to three small meals per day, with additional small feedings beneficial when practical. Once established, this species often adapts well to prepared foods, making automatic feeders useful for distributing appropriately sized pellets throughout the day.

Temperament and Tankmates

Male Tricolor Anthias are generally compatible with peaceful to moderately assertive marine fish but can be noticeably territorial toward other anthias. Mature males may display, chase females, or challenge other males as they establish social dominance.

Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, fairy and flasher wrasses, tangs, rabbitfish, peaceful angelfish, and other non-predatory community species capable of competing comfortably for food.

Keeping multiple mature males together is generally not recommended unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and provides substantial territorial separation. A single male may be maintained alone or with several females in a suitably spacious system.

Like other anthias, this species is a protogynous hermaphrodite. If a dominant male is absent, a dominant female may transition into a male as the social structure of the group changes.

Reef Compatibility

The male Tricolor Anthias is considered reef safe and is an excellent choice for coral-dominated aquariums. It does not normally consume or damage stony corals, soft corals, clams, or other sessile reef organisms.

It is also generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other established reef invertebrates. Tiny copepods and other planktonic crustaceans may naturally be consumed as part of its normal feeding behavior.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable, well-oxygenated water with consistently good water quality. Efficient filtration and regular nutrient management are particularly important because this active species benefits from multiple daily feedings. Stability is more important than targeting one exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Distinctive male coloration: Mature males develop a bold red mid-body band separating the pinkish-orange forward body from the yellowish rear section.

  • Assertive temperament: Can be more territorial than many smaller anthias, particularly toward competing males and similar planktivores.

  • Frequent feeding: Benefits from several small meals of plankton-sized, protein-rich marine foods throughout the day.

  • Active swimming: Requires generous open water along with caves and shaded retreats within the rockwork.

  • Group structure: Best maintained as a single male or as one male with several females in an appropriately spacious aquarium.
