TSA Blood Simple Leptoseris Coral FAQ's

Why does my Blood Simple Leptoseris fade or bleach even at “normal” reef lighting levels?

Leptoseris evolved for dim, mesophotic zones and can bleach fast under strong PAR. Aim for low light (30–80 PAR), heavy blue spectrum, and long acclimation. If paling occurs, reduce intensity, add shade, and increase nutrients slightly (nitrate 5–15 ppm, phosphate 0.03–0.08). Restore color gradually; sudden jumps in light or ultra-low nutrients often cause loss of fluorescence and tissue.

How should I mount it to avoid detritus buildup and tissue recession on the plates?

Mount on a vertical or angled surface so the plating edge sheds debris. Avoid flat, horizontal shelves where sand and mulm collect. Provide gentle, indirect flow to keep the surface clean without lifting tissue. Keep it off the sandbed, and place away from vermetid snails; their mucus threads irritate the thin tissue and trigger recession along the rim.

My colony is growing thin “shelves” that shadow themselves—how do I keep inner areas healthy?

This species plates and self-shades. Periodically rotate the rock or shift the coral a few inches so inner ledges receive mild, indirect light. Maintain stable alkalinity (8–9 dKH) to support edge calcification. A light nighttime feeding of fine particulates (e.g., rotifers, reef powders) 1–2× weekly helps shaded sections retain tissue without increasing algae pressure.

What pests or issues are unusually problematic for Leptoseris, and how do I respond?

Look for flatworms, nudibranchs, or tiny snails that track linear bite marks along the rim. Also watch for bacterial peel after alkalinity swings. Dip new frags (iodine or broad-spectrum coral dip), inspect at night with a flashlight, and quarantine when possible. At first sign of edge-loss, stabilize parameters, increase gentle flow, perform an iodine dip, and trim dead edges to prevent further recession.

Frag Size: 1/2 - 3/4 inch frag

Placement: Mount your new coral using IC gel glue, putty, or a combinations of both. Place the coral on a rock or ledge in a location that receives direct lighting and ample flow.

Feeding: Top Shelf Aquatics recommends feeding hard corals with a combination of foods like Zooplanktons, Phytoplanktons, Amino Acids and other Organic Proteins . A daily broadcast feeding while return and circulations pumps are stopped will ensure the corals have the ability to consume the nutrients they require.

Lighting & Flow: Hard corals require moderate water flow and moderate lighting to maintain proper color. T5's, Metal Halides, or LED's can all grow acropora when the proper PAR levels are provided. We recommend a 14-20K color spectrum for best coloration.
