Why does my Rainbow Lobophyllia Coral shift colors over time, and how can I keep the rainbow tones vivid?
Color shifts reflect light spectrum, intensity, and nutrient balance. Too much white/UV or very low nutrients can mute reds/oranges; overly blue-heavy light can push greens/teals. Aim for moderate PAR (100–150), balanced spectrum (12–18K), stable nitrate 5–15 ppm and phosphate 0.03–0.08 ppm. Feed small meaty foods weekly to support pigments. Avoid rapid changes; acclimate to new lighting over 2–3 weeks.
It inflates during the day but recedes at night—normal for Lobophyllia hemprichii?
Yes. This species often puffs up for light and recedes to extend feeders after dusk. Night shrinkage can look dramatic. If tissue remains tight and polyp feeders deploy, it’s healthy. Watch for exposed sharp septa or persistent daytime recession—signs of flow too high, stings from neighbors, or alkalinity swings. Adjust placement and verify stability before increasing feeding.
How aggressive is it, and what placement minimizes stings and tissue damage?
At night, sweepers can extend 10–15 cm. Place it on sand or an isolated rock “island” with a rubble buffer, giving 15–20 cm clearance from fleshy LPS and softies. Use moderate, indirect flow—enough to keep mucus from settling but not so strong that tissue rubs on the skeleton.
