Care & Diet Feeding, nutrition, and best practices.

Diet Type: Omnivore

Diet and Feeding: In captivity, it is beneficial to offer a varied omnivorous diet that reflects broad natural feeding habits, typically including algae, filamentous plant matter, small crustaceans, and other meaty microfoods. The bulk of the diet should consist of high-quality spirulina-based flakes or pellets, marine algae sheets such as nori, and algae wafers or herbivore pellets as appropriate. To ensure balanced nutrition, supplement regularly with treats like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and occasional frozen prepared blends. Offering seaweed on a clip, pellets in small portions, and frozen foods in a controlled feeding area encourages natural foraging and reduces waste. Feed small amounts once or twice daily, adjusting to appetite, and avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality and long-term health.

Temperament: Peaceful

Captive-bred specimens are typically well-adapted to aquarium life, showing steady swimming behavior and benefiting from open swimming space paired with hiding spots or sheltering structure depending on the species. Temperament is usually peaceful to mildly assertive, with conspecifics often tolerated best when introduced in groups or as a bonded pair, though in some species social hierarchy can emerge. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is a practical baseline for smaller community individuals, with larger tanks and visual barriers or rockwork improving security, reducing stress, and limiting territorial disputes. They generally coexist well with reef-safe species and similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates, provided stocking levels are moderate and no fin-nipping or bullying occurs. Dietary habits are usually omnivorous, with captive individuals readily accepting prepared foods, frozen fare, and in many cases small live foods, though grazing or hunting tendencies may still be expressed depending on the taxon.

Golden Lined Rabbitfish ( Siganus lineatus)

The Golden Lined Rabbitfish, also known as the Golden Spinefoot, is a stunning and hardy algae grazer. Its silver body, crisscrossed with intricate golden lines and spots, makes it one of the most elegant herbivorous fish in the hobby. Found in coastal reefs and lagoons throughout the Indo-Pacific, it plays a key role in natural algae control.

Tank Requirements
A tank of at least 125 gallons is recommended to support its active swimming behavior. Provide ample rockwork for grazing and shelter, along with stable water parameters. These fish prefer moderate flow and well-oxygenated environments. Exercise caution when handling, as their dorsal spines are venomous.

Color, Personality, and Hardiness
Golden Lined Rabbitfish are peaceful, intelligent, and highly adaptive. They can be shy initially but soon become confident grazers in the open. Their brilliant golden markings intensify under strong reef lighting. Known for their resilience, they adjust well to captive conditions and coexist peacefully with most tankmates.

Diet and Feeding
Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae, spirulina, nori, and plant-based pellets. Supplement with small portions of mysis or brine shrimp to ensure complete nutrition. Regular feedings throughout the day promote natural grazing behavior and prevent nipping at soft corals.

Tankmates and Behavior
Reef-safe with caution, they generally ignore corals but may sample soft varieties if underfed. Best housed singly or as a bonded pair, they are compatible with tangs, wrasses, and angelfish. Their steady grazing makes them invaluable members of a clean, balanced reef environment.
