Description

Marbled Bamboo Cat Shark (Chiloscyllium plagiosum)

The Marbled Bamboo Cat Shark is a fascinating and highly sought-after species known for its elongated body, striking marbled pattern, and calm bottom-dwelling behavior. Juveniles display bold dark bands and mottled markings that gradually transition into a beautiful marbled pattern as they mature. Unlike active open-water sharks, this species spends most of its time resting along the substrate, making it one of the more suitable shark species for advanced home aquariums.

Tank Requirements

Due to its adult size and benthic lifestyle, the Marbled Bamboo Cat Shark requires a minimum tank size of 300 gallons, though larger systems are strongly recommended for long-term success. A wide footprint is far more important than tank height, as these sharks spend nearly all their time on the bottom.

Provide:

  • Fine sand substrate to protect the shark’s sensitive underside
  • Open swimming lanes along the bottom
  • Stable rockwork secured directly to the tank bottom
  • Dim to moderate lighting with shaded resting areas

Excellent filtration and stable water parameters are critical, as sharks are extremely sensitive to poor water quality and copper exposure.

Bottom-Dwelling Predator

Marbled Bamboo Cat Sharks are nocturnal hunters that rely on smell and electroreception to locate food hidden within the substrate. During daylight hours, they typically rest in caves or shaded areas, becoming more active at dusk and nighttime.

While not aggressive hunters toward healthy fish, they will consume any tankmate small enough to fit in their mouth.

Diet and Feeding

These sharks are carnivorous and require a varied, high-quality meaty diet.

Recommended foods include:

  • Pieces of shrimp
  • Squid
  • Clams or scallops
  • Silversides
  • Marine fish flesh

Feed juveniles daily and adults 2–4 times per week, offering appropriately sized portions. Using feeding tongs helps ensure the shark receives adequate nutrition and prevents food competition.

Avoid freshwater feeder fish, as they lack proper nutrition and may introduce disease.

Tankmates and Behavior

Marbled Bamboo Cat Sharks are generally peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates but should only be housed with large, non-aggressive species. Ideal tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, groupers, and peaceful wrasses.

Avoid:

  • Aggressive fin-nippers
  • Triggerfish known for biting
  • Small fish or crustaceans that may be viewed as prey

They are not reef-safe, as they may disturb corals while moving and will consume mobile invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs.

With proper planning, stable water quality, and appropriate space, the Marbled Bamboo Cat Shark becomes an incredible long-term centerpiece animal, offering unique behavior rarely seen in traditional marine aquariums.
