Green Montipora Cap Coral FAQ's

My Green Montipora Cap is plating outward and shading itself and neighbors—how do I manage its growth without constant fragging?

Mount it vertically or at a 45° angle so plates grow in tiers, not umbrellas. Provide strong, turbulent flow beneath the plate to reduce detritus and encourage upward cupping. Leave vertical headroom and lateral gaps for future shelves. Periodically remove “pie slice” sections rather than trimming edges; this preserves natural form and light paths.

Why is my green coloration fading or turning brown, while a purple rim sometimes appears?

Green pigment can wash out in ultra-low nutrients or insufficient blue spectrum, and brown from elevated nutrients/low PAR. Aim for PAR ~200–350 with strong blue/royal-blue. Keep nitrate 2–10 ppm, phosphate 0.03–0.10 ppm, and stable alkalinity 7.5–9 dKH. A purple rim often develops with higher light and steady nutrients; iron and trace balance can subtly affect the intensity.

The base is slowly receding while the edges grow well—what’s causing this?

Stagnant flow and detritus trapped under plates promote bacterial STN at the base. Increase crossflow under the coral, siphon debris during water changes, and avoid shaded dead zones in aquascape. Verify alkalinity stability (daily swings trigger recession). Inspect for montipora-eating nudibranch eggs on the undersides; early infestations often start at hidden bases.

What’s the best strategy against montipora-eating nudibranchs on a cap?

Conduct night inspections with a flashlight; remove adults and scrape egg spirals from undersides. Perform weekly dips (follow product directions) for several weeks to break the hatch cycle, and quarantine affected pieces. Increase flow under plates to reduce hiding spots. Wrasses like Halichoeres chrysus can help control, but manual removal and repeated dips are the backbone of eradication.

Frag Size: 1/2 - 3/4 inch frag

Placement: Mount your new coral using IC gel glue, putty, or a combinations of both. Place the coral on a rock or ledge in a location that receives direct lighting and ample flow.

Feeding: Top Shelf Aquatics recommends feeding hard corals with a combination of foods like Zooplanktons, Phytoplanktons, Amino Acids and other Organic Proteins . A daily broadcast feeding while return and circulations pumps are stopped will ensure the corals have the ability to consume the nutrients they require.

Lighting & Flow: Hard corals require moderate water flow and moderate lighting to maintain proper color. T5's, Metal Halides, or LED's can all grow acropora when the proper PAR levels are provided. We recommend a 14-20K color spectrum for best coloration.
