Coral Care Series: Favia & Favites

Favia and Favites are two of the most popular Brain Corals for the reef-aquarium hobbyists because they are fairly inexpensive and easy to care for.

The similarities between these two corals are uncanny. Distinguishing between them with the naked eye can prove to be difficult.

You can attempt to identify between these corals by looking at their corallites. Specimens that share a common skeletal wall are considered a Favite, while the Favia which have two distinct walls.

When it comes to husbandry and care requirements, Favia and Favites are nearly identical so there is no need to panic if you cannot properly identify which one you are caring for.

These corals have the potential to rapidly grow under the right conditions. Low to moderate flow and lighting is preferred.

Favia and Favites are known to be aggressive when placed within a close distance of another coral, so be mindful when finding a suitable location. Allow for at least 2-4 inches of space between species and keep a watchful eye for the appearance of sweeper tentacles during the first few weeks so you can prevent any potential coral warfare issues and coral losses.

Favia and Favites receive the majority of their nutrients through photosynthesis but target feeding will help promote faster tissue growth. Feeding tentacles are typically seen in the evening at which time you can provide food directly to the coral polyp. This is best done once or twice a week.

These corals feed on a wide variety of small foods and amino acids. Some of our favorites here at Top Shelf are Aquavitro Fuel, PE Mysis, Calanus, and Benepets.

Favia and Favites are popular, often inexpensive, and easy to care for corals. Their multitude of coloration and patterns range from simple, to extravagant and ornate, making some types highly desired and sought after by collectors of all types.
