The broad, adaptable flow produced by the Aqua Illumination Nero 5 is both robust and sensitive. Contrary to conventional propeller designs, which produce a harsh stream that can upset corals, the Nero 5’s innovative propeller pushes water in a wide pattern that may move food, debris, or other free-floating particles about without directly blasting them. Although powerheads have many uses in and around a reef tank, their main purpose is to produce adequate flow to keep low-flow zones from forming and to help lift material so that it can be sucked into the filter. Using Bluetooth, you may set the pump up to different settings or create a daily schedule to change the flow up throughout the day.

You can now connect to your pumps more quickly, with a wider range, and access a number of features thanks to Bluetooth LE, but you can also avoid having to set up a wireless network to interface through. Open the MyAi App, choose a mode, and start using the Aqua Illumination Nero 5 to control the flow in your aquarium right now. You may choose from a range of parameters to find the ideal flow mode for your fish and corals. Among others, the Random and Plan modes stand out. Either create a detailed daily schedule that switches between different modes and settings throughout the day, or use the Random mode to let the Nero 5 generate random numbers on its own.
Don’t worry if you don’t want to use a smart device to control the pump; the provided controller, while having just one button, is quite strong. Without using any extra control interfaces, you may adjust the speed, mode, or switch the pump on or off by pushing or holding the button for varied durations of time.
- Random – Your tank will be kept busy by the variable flow mode. The water in your reef tank will move naturally because of the Nero 5’s unpredictable flow rate variations throughout the day.
- Pulse – Standing waves may be created by using the Nero 5’s Pulse Mode. You may change the maximum flow rate and pulse interval to fit your tank. Although a wave is a great technique to remove built-up garbage from small locations, it also puts more strain on your aquarium.
- Constant – Put it out of your mind! Simply select the appropriate flow rate, and the Nero 5 will maintain that speed until you change the mode or flow.
- Schedule – Create a schedule that can be applied to different flow scenarios. A flow schedule may be quickly and easily created with the MyAi app.
- Feed – If you wish to target feed, you need a pump with a feed mode. Simply hold down the driver button for 2 to 5 seconds to put the Nero 5 into feed mode for 10 minutes.
- All-Off – Your pump may be turned off at any time, and you have total control over when it restarts. To stop the pump, simply maintain pushing the driver button for six or more seconds. Pressing the button once more will resume the pump.
The magnetic mounting system built into the Nero 5 makes it simple to move the pump after it has been attached. You may tilt the Nero 5 with a movement of around 15° to direct flow in your aquarium where it is needed. The two-part mounting system’s beveled inner magnet, which contains an inner magnet and an exterior magnet that can couple together through 1/2″ of glass or less, is then inserted into the pump.
Slow-moving and inquisitive creatures are better protected thanks to the fish guard.
